Might be worth trying the VW Engine Company in Keston:

Or Autocraft in Charlton:

Few companies are willing to take on this task nowadays. As you say, mostly just supply recon engines.
J mentions two places. I would also consider contacting...

Not sure he’d do an engine out job for waterjackets as he’s mainly bodywork and servicing but can always give them a try:

Yes, that's the risk but I judge it to be the lesser of two weevils (apologies to Master and Commander fans).

Aiden, in your case did the pump go very quickly or was it a slower 'dribble your way home' type of event?

about a year, cause and effect I can't be sure; put a used pump on and that did another year or so of reduced mileage, so yes it's a worthwhile risk, the k seal mostly stopped the leaks from head seal though and from the weepy stud nut that I daren't check the tightness (or lack of, it had clearly been 'sealed/glued')

I've experienced the death throes of water pumps on other cars, gentle knocks getting louder, dripping and finally the skreeetch of death so will keep my only operative ear open.

Ours currently displays a tiny bit of shiny shaft suggesting some end float...might find myself a spare!

Hi,
You could try John Bowles in Riverhead, Sevenoaks. Has been working etc on VW's for years. Always found them honest/upfront etc.
Straight run down the A21 from Hither Green.
