1983 1.9 VW Transporter - potential head gasket issue
I like the 34Dat Weber fitted to mine but not heard great things of the 32/36 but it all comes down to how they are jetted.
The 34Dat kit Weber used to supply allowed the engine to run but a lot can be improved by changing jet sizes.
Anyway, I would say wait and see what prognosis is. I suspect a full rebuild may prove expensive on the wallet depending on what a strip down actually reveals.
Short term you may find yourself looking at a replacement “used” engine, known to be good preferred, which could get you back on the road a little cheaper.
You may get lucky and find a complete pull no ancillaries which may answer you carb choice.

Answering on behalf of BB3...
Yep! AJ Simmons of Campershack is 100 percent right and wins a cigar. Many thanks.
The engine is burnt toast. A mechanic in Folkstone dropped the engine latter part of this week and sent photos.

And back again, for sure. The seller should hold his/her head in shame for such deliberate deceit.

Further good news is the engine is almost turn key with Pierberg carb and correct filter. So BB3 can dump or sell current carb and electric fuel pump for starters (pun )

Hats off to you @maxstu
well done for helping the new owners.

Re: 1983 1.9 VW Transporter - potential head gasket issue
Might be worth putting the carb and manifold up on eBay as someone will take it and it’ll recoup some of the funds laid out for the new DG.

Re: 1983 1.9 VW Transporter - potential head gasket issue
A good thought J, yet l advised BB3 staying with standard set up carb and filter system on donor engine.

Re: 1983 1.9 VW Transporter - potential head gasket issue
Sorry Stu, should’ve been clearer on that - I meant the Weber mate

Re: 1983 1.9 VW Transporter - potential head gasket issue
Think that’s the best idea especially if BB3 has limited mechanical knowledge. While I like my 34Dat, keeping the setup stock will mean it’s much easier asking for help on the forum if needed.maxstu wrote:A good thought J, yet l advised BB3 staying with standard set up carb and filter system on donor engine.
