Having just sorted out the poor starting of my van it appears the engine is so tired it needs replacing. My van is 1.7 deisel 1989 lhd with a 4 speed box. Whats going to be the best and least difficult transplant. Is the 4 speed box going to be a problem.

Didn't even think of that, unfortunately engine has already had at least one new head and been skimmed as a result of a long running overheating problem, do you think a recon is still viable. Is there anywhere you would reccomend, I'm in Essex but would have no problem travelling further to get the right job.

google some recon peeps near you.
otherwise you can straight fit a 1.9 non turbo using all your old bits- sump manifolds ect.
check ebay / local breakers ect . anything 2nd hand is just that , despite what you will be fobbed off with , if it runs its a good one. how long for you never know.
decide on what your going to be using it for .
regular use , daily driver, occasional trips , european travel?
2nd hand is prob the cheapest , great if not using the van much , but as a daily driver that needs to be reliable spend the money and use it!
