audi a3 tdi engine mounting possition

right here is the prediciment i have the audi engine all ready to go in but sincehave found out that it can not physically lay on its side because oil will spew out the breather pipe and either seize the engine or set fire to my van so that idea is out of the window. UNLESS... and i know this is blatfamy to most of you but could it be mouted up right in the engine bay ? i know the clearance would have to be sorted there would have to be a subframe made to heigher the engine lid, but what is to stop me from mounting it up right ? i know mounts will have to be made ect but is there anything that really wont work?
cheers :) dan

Hi Dan,

I really don't think the oil will spill out of the CCV like you say - all the diesels lay at 50 degrees and have breathers, and the CCV or "puck" on top of the engine has a regulatory valve in it which tries to minimise the oil passing into the induction system and on some separates it back down into the sump. I'm not sure if I understand why you think the breather will cause this. If you have a healthy engine with decent rings etc... then the blowby will be minimal anyway. What you can do is install a "catch can" which just vents to atmosphere - I had one for a while to see the amount of oil that was getting blown out - some - but not enough for me to worry about runaways or the engine locking up.

Mounting it at 90 degrees will take even more work than you've already undertaken, not just for the clearance issues, but also because I believe you need to fabricate all sorts of stuff to make the engine and gearbox mate up properly. People have done this is dokas where there is enough height to be able to do it but as far as I understand it it's a lot of work!

good luck

hi
well i dont know really i went to pick up a few bits for my van from some vw nuts. and one of the bloke was an engine specialist who dose alternative engine conversions ect ... and when we told him about what we were doing and about the mounting issues ect and he basically just raveled off a list of things why it wont work and was saying that these engines should never be mounted on their side because they will spue oil out ever where and seiz. that along with the mounting issues i have mentionedin my other post led me to belive that mounting it vertical would be best but i guess that just isnt the way ?
i wish i never set eyes on this engine haha
cheers

Hello,

there are quite a few people who have fully functioning vans who would disagree! It's not being mounted on it's side exactly - that would be troublesome - it's being tipped over 50 degrees, which has been proven to work in all the diesel engines fitted to these vans as standard and subsequently with the AAZ and 1Z conversions of which there are loads.

hi
yeah i know 50degrees is what i mean by laying it on its side, and yeah i understand that there of loads of td and tdi vans out there like that but this fellow reckons that this problem is specific to this engine and it just will not work with this code engine. i dont know

I may be wrong, and perhaps other people more knowledgable will provide better information, but an AGR engine is basically an ALH with a wastegate turbo instead of a VNT, and I know the ALH has been done successfully...

i have no idea really this is competly over my head now and i dont want to get stuck too deep in it to find out in the end that i knacker it within 100 miles or what ever i mean if it comes to it i could fabricate the mounts ect but i am after a definate before i go chopping about and ah right i see do you run and alh then ?
cheers

I run an AHU with a biggish VNT turbo, so I appreciate the clearance issues...

There's a thread here about sticking an ALH into a t25:
