Empty T25 shell needs a diesel engine - but what fits?

Post by nevanalley »

Hi folks! Hubby and I bought a shell back in May and very slowly resurrecting her. We bought her without an engine or gearbox, so are now on the hunt for the best option. It originally had a 2.1 Air-Cooled engine. We want a diesel engine - ideally 2.0l or there abouts with automatic transmission (I'm a shorty!!). While my hubby is fairly up on mechanical stuff, I'm not (learning fast though!). Can anyone give us suggestions of engines that fit into our 1983 T25?

We might have a chance of a 2l turbo diesel out of a 1998 Passat? Does anyone know if this fits?

Cheers!

Thanks for that, but I've already read it and didn't understand a word of it! I'm not a mechanic and don't understand the jargon. I need someone to tell me in plain speak which engines fit; e.g. VW Passat 2.0 1989 so I can go buy one!!!! Talk of torque, gear ratios and various abbreviations etc are something I'll get my head around when the time comes.

Can anyone give me a straightforward answer please?

Ta!

with an auto box you are limited on engines.
the auto box was made to go with the original flat (wbx) engine that was fitted to these vans.
it is posible to mount a diesel engine on an auto gearbox but its not "standard" bolt together stuff.

for auto your easy options are 1.9 petrol or 2.1 petrol.

what year is your van?
WHY T3's.... because they are just so adictive, and having one just aint enough

Stick a 1Y 1.9 diesel [from a golf and other types]in it seems very popular
married to a 3H gearbox would be ok
maybe forget about the automatic?
its what i have and im happy it also has power if i want :rollin
but i normally potter about saving fuel...well actually part veg oil when i find it cheep enough from the supermarket or chip pan[filterd ofcourse] :ok

Any engine can be made to fit, it really depends on your technical knowledge and of course finances.

Have a look through this setion as there are people who have donr basic engine swaps etc and the info in those threads is more relevant that a technical description of all options.

Good Luck

Well there was 3 different engines fitted to them!

Hence why you will see engine codes like AHY AEB etc etc ! Plus was your van originally aircold? ie does it have a radiator, coz if it dont its gonna cost a hell of a lot more!
