sooty air filter

Post by sivan »

Morning All

Had my bus serviced last year not long after purchase and air filter was very dirty, put this down to PO neglect ,however just had a service again and air filter is very black/sooty after only 3000 miles .I have noticed that around the inspection flap behind number plate does get pretty black aswell .Any ideas as what could cause this ? TIA

the bus is a 1.9 1Y diesel conversion

what sort of air filter do you have ? post up a picture or two, every conversion is different so it is difficult to advise without knowing more - the black button marked i can be used to easily add pics when you post up a reply

mechanic thinks may have a split in back box causing soot but why would this get into air box?I cannot see a split and because the back box is welded to the downpipe i cannot remove it without removing downpipe  aswell  but looks like the studs / nuts on the manifold are corroded so badly they will need to be cut and manifold looks like its seen better days !Image

Your n/a diesel appears to be missing the breather valve in the cam cover, so it is inhaling oil vapour.
