AAZ Diesel pump slight leak

So the truck has been laid up for about a month having a bit of rare TLC. Started it up to get the oil moving prior to an oil change and let it idle for a while.
I noticed a trickle of diesel coming (I think) from the shaft on top of the pump, where the two return springs are.
Has anyone had any experience of replacing the seal in there?
Oddly enough when I revved it the leak stopped as did a slight rattly sound, typical of a poor running diesel. It may be that having been stood for a while the seal was dry and that revving it settled it down but I suspect that this may indicate a repair coming up.
I'm hoping it can be done in situ.
