Recovered home

Post by Bobreoc »

Not a great Sunday.

Had a lovely day up elan valley until I broke down on the way home, it’s doka with a 1z conversion. The van was running really well then all of a sudden the wheels felt like they locked then into freewheel then the van cut out, I managed to get it into a lay-by.
The recovery truck turned up pretty quick all I could see was that the lower crank pulley on the alternator belt had come away, not completely but all the nuts look like there in place.
It’s dark now so I can’t investigate any further but what are people’s thoughts? Could it be terminal. There was oil leaking from the sump as which hasent happened before.

Yea it has come loose. I just don’t know
If it’s terminal

I think what I’m worried about is, if the 4 bolts have just come loose form the crank pulley and the underneath the cambelt looked ok. Would I be ok to tighten the bolts back down refit the belt and start it? Or could the timing be out?

Given that you said the wheels locked up, I suspect the central ( 12 point )bolt which holds the toothed timing pulley to the crankshaft nose has come loose , likely damaging the nose of the crankshaft and the toothed pulley as well as valve / piston damage through lost valve timing.

As a precaution before starting ,I have found that the engine can normally be turned (slowly)by hand (against the compression)with a socket and ratchet handle on the 12 point bolt, which I would do at least two revolutions after fitting a timing belt, for example.

You will have the same damage top end as happens with a snapped cam belt, the crank will also be damaged, replacement used engine will be your best option

Thanks for the advice.

After what I’ve read yesterday and the state it’s in, I’ll start looking for another
Engine. I’ll still have a check on the damage as it could be a spare if it’s not
To bad
