GTi conversion using automatic box

Musing over alternative petrol engines is golf GTi 2.0 etc but wishing to retain automatic gearbox as I like the relaxed behaviour in traffic ,my question is has anybody done such on here that may offer pointers ?

only wish I could have an auto, but it wont do in a syncro!

My aim is primarily more bhp thus , potentially much improved mpg , and a far more economic package to maintain . My own experience of parts cost and availability being a big factor ,as,when the two are compared directly. Far more good usable inline 4's available at minimal cost,all 2nd hand wbx v expensive and almost all have expensive issues, personally not bothered about retaining originality,I just desire a less stressed unit pulling me over the Pyrenees etc ,but importantly retaining the autobox . 120bhp + versus 70 maybe makes sense to me .

Ok, fair enough. The GTi conversion is good, but personally in a T3 I prefer the "feel" of a WBX. For more bhp you could just go for a bigger WBX, but it sounds like you're not a fan! Many people find a DJ on a carb with LPG a very good combination.
My own vehicle runs a middle-aged DJ 2.1 (injection) auto setup, with BLOS LPG, and it's certainly boss of any hill we've climbed.

I'll be starting building engines again in the new year, and the first will probably be a 2.2 (DJ style high compression big bore pistons, not the low comp MV ones sold everywhere else). It should match your GTi output of 115bhp, fit straight in and be equally reliable. However, it won't be cheap (price yet to be calculated, but at least 3.5k).

Seemingly nobody has done this conversion ,perhaps the cost of a Kennedy Engineering from the states bellhousing adapter plate and flexplate solution are why,unless someone knows different .

What did you decide to do in the end? I am in a similar situation but my DG has lost compression on no. 3 and needs pulling out.

My thoughts are:
to rebuild the current engine and stick with the underpowered feeling (German autobahns are a bit iffy!) and using it to your Europe is the plan.

To ship in a 2.1 mv and all its electrical injection from Germany, refresh it and install it. If so how far does one go... Heads and rings (I've done this before) or go full split case and all bearings renewed (not done this before).

To source all of the parts for a golf engine conversion (tricky) and keep it vw but with more power than the dg.

Buy new all of the conversion parts and go subaru e220.

Buy a newly built (expensive) bigger wbx.

What are people's experiences of the above with the automatic gearbox?

Has campershack opened in the new location yet?




I'm in the Netherlands so that adds a further complications as garage rental is hard to find and labour costs here are likely to run into 0000s so I'm needing to DIY...
