Stopped for a poorly T25 near Helmsley
Looks like it has skipped on the cambelt
Can anyone direct to instructions to set the timing
Assume injection pump need doiing as part of the process
Any special tools needed, it is hard to identify timing marks

Re: urgent help needed 1.9 AFN engine
Just an update after about an hour providing assistance.
One of the fingers on the back of the tensioner that came off is bent - not sure how that has happened, perhaps the tensioner came loose ?
I think we managed to figure out where the crank needed to be, probably where the injection pump should be set, but the camshaft sprocket timing eluded us.
It was also proving difficult to get the crank / cam timing in the right place, without valves meeting pistons, I am suspecting they met when the belt jumped. Apparently the engine became very loud with many bad noises.
The van is being towed home as it was clear we were unlikely to get it running, despite a fair bit of determination.
The owner now knows about us and this thread, so if we could post some useful instructions I am sure it will be appreciated.

Re: urgent help needed 1.9 AFN engine
Useful video, but doesn't properly address setting the timing from scratch as it is for a running engine

What looks like a good start to the job but the important bit is hidden behind a "premium" membership
https://www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/timi ... i-removal/
and kit available from the usual supplier - it seems from reading around that water pump replacement is recommended at the same time

and a couple of other useful threads, though in this case the pump timing is just manual

Re: urgent help needed 1.9 AFN engine (similar to 1Z, AHU, 1Y)
Just use a Haynes for the vehicle that the engine came out of for things related to the engine is the obvious answer! I use the VW Golf and Vento Feb 1992 to Mar 1998 for my 1Y. Saves finding stuff on t'internet and printing it off. Mine covers AAZ, 1Z, 1Y, AAM, ABS, 2E, ADZ, ADY, AEK, ABF, ABD, AEA,ABU, but not AFN.
The only timing mark that would be used is the flywheel one so don't bother looking for any. Camshaft is easy enough - flat plate and two sets of feeler gauges in slot on rear of cam.
Good chance that you will be looking at bent valves though.

Basic timing is done with flat plate on the cam, and a peg through the pump pulley into the backplate. Then of course timing mark on flywheel/clutch plate.
Pump timing is adjusted via VCDS on a lap top.
But if the timing belt has gone, it's a interference engine so highly likely damaged to valves at a minimum.
