A friend is having a problem with their 2004 1.6i Golf. From what I can gather the Golf was showing some faults so went in to the garage who said that the ECU was gone. This was sent away to a supposed expert and two weeks later it was returned with a vague non committal "we don't know what the problem is"! A replacement has been quoted at almost £2000 which is more than the Golf is worth. The friend was told by someone else that replacements can be bought "on the interwebs" for about £100 but their garage said if they would be made inactive if fitted. Any thoughts from the experts? Is the Golf now scrap or can these £100 ECUs be made to work?

Re: Non T25 but still VW query
They could post this query on the UK MIVS forum. Brilliant resource, not unlike this is for van stuff.
My MK 4 Golf is a TDI, but from what I know the ECUs can be picked up at a scrappys and plugged in, BUT they need to be coded to the 'new' engine via plugging in the VacCom software. Many of the users of the forum have the software and often help each other out for the price of a pint.
