The next mod - what gearbox mod or replacement for the AAZ?
So the AAZ is in and running nicely, with no leaks, so Im a happy camper. It's currnetly on the original 1.6d box which as you can imagine is a little revvy and the top speed is of course identical to the 1.6d.
What would be the members recommendation on the most cost effective/perhaps the most effective gearbox replacement or modification? Basically best bang for buck.
To be honest I don't want to drive over 70 but it would be good if 70 wasn't flat out.

Larger diameter wheels.
After my was fitted with an ADY motor I fitted 16" with 215/65 tyres which are 5% oversize, made a huge difference.
Some Merc steelies (15 & 16) fit straight on and you have a huge tyre selection.
Use the tyre size calculator in the WiKi.

Agree on wheel sizes. Tyres can work out cheaper too on 15" providing you don't fit low profiles.

Which don't look good on a bus (my opinion).CovKid wrote:...." providing you don't fit low profiles.

I hadn't even considered that, brilliant thanks! Looks like my current tyres are slightly bigger than the standards?

Maybe its time to dig out my old granada alloys from the garage and see if its doable to them fitted with some load rated tyres.
Although the merc wheels sound tempting if they fit straight on.

After a week or so driving on the new engine I am still airing towards a gearbox change or update. its a very short gearbox and anything over 50 feels like youre pushing it, with the full remanufacture I am not keen to reduce its life by revving it hard. I don't think bigger tyres will help enough tbh.

Re: The next mod - what gearbox mod or replacement for the AAZ?
I have the 3h gearbox with my aaz, fitted by previous owner, running on the usual 185 tyres. So 5 speed box with 1st gear more of a crawler.
5th gear at 3200 revs pulls about 55ish+, easily pulls 65 with more in reserve. I tend to stick around the 55-60 mark because im a tight a***.

Re: The next mod - what gearbox mod or replacement for the AAZ?
We have a 5 speed ABN coded gearbox, which I believe is from a 1.9 Petrol van, on our AAZ conversion together with 15" wheels and 195 15C tyres which have a tall profile. This suits the AAZ engine well and gives 20mph per 1000 revs in top so 70mph comes at 3500rpm, although we tend to keep at or below 65 except when overtaking!!

Hi, I had the same problem and fitted 215 R14C's and made it tolerable at cruising speeds (60'ish). Previously it was screaming at 50! Can't remember what gearbox is fitted but the original engine was a 1700 diesel.
Re: The next mod - what gearbox mod or replacement for the AAZ?
Don't want to spam you but have a set of four 215/14 with loadsa tread on I fitted for same reason. Gone to 16s on a different box now so am selling them.

I'd say go for a flipped A4 box.
Cruising at 70 is about 2400rpm. As long as the AAZ has enough torque to pull it.
Dave.
