Now that is a good idea. I've got 4 waffle boards and a bunch of bricks and patio slabs that could go underneath.

Really, would a double height layer of bricks with a 1'x4' waffle spreader on top not cut it?

Bricks have a nasty habit of going *pop* under compressive load without a good foundation and well cured mortar in between...
A pair of ramps is what, 30 quid?

Not sure if it's any help, but I use these ramps on my 4x4s...

Not cheap but so worth it on a vehicle with a bit of ground clearance...

I found both an engine crane and an engine stand to make life so much easier when I did the Scooby swap. I reached out to local forums to borrow a week or so before I began so I could hit the ground running. El Sid for the engine crane (sadly no longer with us) and someone from Weston for the stand (off Blitzen Sphincters VW forum). The engine stand although not a necessity was great for prepping and cleaning up the donor before it went in. Nice to spin things about for easy vertical spanner work

Good luck - and I'm still aiming to come over on the 18th if you need some help.

yes I am here, can you remove the passenger seat in the mazda ? if so folding crane with legs off should fit and you can borrow some 6 tonne axle stands that are high enough to get engine out under valence on some carpet and card
Simon TMT has my engine stand at the mo I think

Thanks Aidan.
Should have car ramps from local Machine Mart by lunchtime and a shout out to local VW people to see if there's a crane and stand I can borrow. If no joy there I may well be driving to yours sometime before Wednesday. I'll call you either way.

Engine in van already partly disconnected insitu with leccy and coolant system unplugged, so its already undriveable.

Ramps!

With axle stands set a few mm below as backup.

Dismemberment going OK. Still to do - drain PAS fluid and petrol, remove underbody protection, disconnect battery then remove cables to alternator and starter.

Best tool so far - hose clamp pliers.

Thats better! Unbolt pas pump and hang out of the way, swap hoses over as last job. You dont want any dirt in the lines wrecking the rack seals...
