AFN tdi install what other parts do I require?
Just toting with the idea of swapping the pug motor out for a chipped afn. I have currently got chance of an A4 donor for free and have the following parts.
Rebuilt tdi spec 3h box of Aidan with taller 5th
Td sump and bell housing
Diesel bars and mounts
Complete 1y tdi set up removed from my old golf some years ago
Donor A4
Would be looking to do as much of the convention myself as possible and buy in a loom of Tim Shettle or another specialist, I currently have no exhaust system or Jx manifolds and wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of what else il need and my best option for flywheel input shaft clutch etc. do I buy an input shaft and use tdi setup or go down the hybrid vr6 pressure plate, dg friction and 1y flywheel. All help appreciated.

Re: AFN tdi install what other parts do I require?
was the tdi spec box not built with a tdi shaft in it, seems odd someone would go to all that effort and not have the shaft done as well ?
its not the big stuff that costs its all the little stuff, intercooler hoses that actually fit where you need them to be and the like can eat a few hundred pounds in no time
I have the tdi flywheel with a 2.1 pressure plate, been on for 4 years and my van aint light
as the afn is chipped I wouldnt think it would like running the jx manifold

Re: AFN tdi install what other parts do I require?
I had the box built with a petrol input shaft to suit my pug td engine setup, box has been fine in the van and suited well to the 2.1 td (112bhp). Fancying afn now chipped approx 140bhp and no need for engine lid mods like with Peugeot. I asked Tim from ultimate engineering about the Jx manifold over afn he assured me use a Jx so I'm going with his advice, maybe its a space issue?? However I do recall reading somewhere that the tdi ports and Jx manifolds are a different shape but don't no how this compromises power output ?

I spoke to a tuning specialist not just a company that just does remaps. He said that the AFN manifold is restrictive. He was concerned about the bottle neck effect of the JX manifold.
If you go ahead I will be very interested in the results.

PD130 inlet manifold fitted to mine, good for many horses.....

my apologies, I read it like you had acquired the box and had it lying around ready for the install not in the van being used
tim would know the manifold better than me thats for sure
on a different track....can the 2.1 not be tuned, I was fitting a 1.9 xantia engine in my bay before I got tempted by a T3 and that was heavily modified

Yes it can be tuned but to be fair it goes well enough anyway, one of the fastest vans I've had yet. As fast through the gears as a 306 d turbo which isn't a bad effort. Just fancying an afn instal in westy fitting under the standard engine lid height etc.

Are you using a Jx engine mount then of is if an after market one? How much was involved with fitting the pd manifold if u don't mind saying mate?

Re: AFN tdi install what other parts do I require?
Hello,
I had a PD130 on mine - introduced a not very happy 180 degree bend. I'd have liked to have rewelded the input so there was a direct line to the intercooler top hose but that was beyond my abilities for sure - allard do an EGR delete flange for it which I used:
I also used the AFN exhaust manifold with a VA turbo, but I know Tim Shettle does an adapter for the VNT on the JX exhaust manifold.
Totally agree about the little stuff - it all adds up. I would seriously consider a vertical install - lots of people (including me) seem to think that is way to go. I used a sachs tdi clutch, tdi input shaft and flywheel. You can get an uprated G60 clutch to work too. I ran some serious torque and the clutch setup I had was fine though.

That is a tight bend. When u say you had a pd manifold??? Did u mean u have a pd manifold?? What set up have you got for your turbo side engine mount using the afn exhaust manifold? Surely its nog a Jx one? Did that air intake pipe work ok u got off me last year? Hardly been on here since selling the panel van so out of touch with people's projects a bit.

Re: AFN tdi install what other parts do I require?
I'm really sorry - I'd totally forgotten about that. Yeah - I made up the snorkel with a 90 degree bend and it worked well but I never tested it properly.
I had a fabricated mount - if you want to get one made up I'd speak to Phil Miller on here - he made a cracking one for his 1z - you'd need a bit more clearance than for the GT15 turbo for the VNT15 though.
I'm sorry to say I don't have the van any more - some bad luck, some incompetence on my part, but circumstances have meant I'm currently only travelling about on 2 (non-motorised) wheels....
