The glow plugs should be on for longer than that, 25 - 30 seconds when properly cold. (vw timings) 7 seconds will hardly get them up to temp I would have thought.
I would start with doubling the resistance of the sensor that you are using and suck it and see.

From cold it's really good, 7 seconds on the glow plug, starts on the button, negligible smoke although not started it in freezing temps yet. From what I've read I'll try a 600 ohm resistor today. Slightly more fiddly to fit as mines the very late one with the junior timer style plug on the sensor. Thanks for your help.

Make up a short lead with a plug and socket either end and you can put the resistor in the lead off the van - easier to swap a different one. When done you can wrap it to the other wire for support.

Just to follow this up, fitted 620 ohm resistor to the blue/white wire going on to the temp sensor on the very back of the head in the heater outlet. From cold now glow plug light stays on for 11 seconds and starts immediately with no smoke. When warm the glow plug light now comes on for 5 seconds and again starts immediately. Before there was no glow plug light and it would wind over for about 10 seconds before firing.
So I'll run it like this and see how it goes. Thanks very much for the input.

hello folks.
it isn't clear to me whether the thread is saying to replace the clutch with another or not, as in one matched specifically to the 1.9 1Y or go with the original. I have the original 4 speed gearbox and 1Y mated fine with original clutch, that runs but slips.
can someone weigh in and clarify?

No need to use a different clutch, I used a new one though as my old one was due for replacement anyway. I have never had any slippage with it.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I've just completed a conversion bar the throttle linkage conversion so I can shut the engine cover. Is buying the £52 Brickwerks kit (currently OOS) still the best option or is there anywhere that shows how to modify/adapt the existing? I might have a go myself but there must be many on here who have done it. Tried a search but can't see a How To. Any pointers much appreciated.

Look back a couple of pages and you can see the lever that I made and where the outer is fixed. Not difficult to make and weld on.

So you left all the main part/springs etc as is and just cut the end of the lever and weld a longer one on at an angle and then fabricate a cable holder? When I looked at the kit it looked as if they removed the top spring.
Did you have to modify the engine cover at all?

No modification to the cover other than removing the insulation in the lever area. Another view without Pbucket plastered all over it. (Ignore the red - that was for something else) And before anyone says - injector pipes clip not fitted yet!

Great, thanks. I'll get fabricating and try to remember to take pics as I go in case anyone else is still thinking of this conversion. Getting very hard to find a decent (reasonably priced) 1Y now though.

Has anyone had the issue of fuel not coming out the injection pump into the injector lines? I've cracked the lines open and bled the pump but fuel enters the pump and then straight out the return pipe. I've removed the shutoff plunger in the solenoid on the pump to see if that was causing issues but no luck. Any suggestions?
