WBX-to-inline adaptor plate

Post by silverbullet »

What with all the interest in 2E, AGG and various diesel conversions recently, a while ago I got a sniff of an unusual and original adaptor plate and as a result have got involved in someone else's inline conversion project

In brief, Passat 1Y diesel engine going into a 2.1 wbx DOKA but not in the usual way... 20 degree install, wbx bellhousing and starter (not diesel), Petrol gearbox input shaft, slightly modified solid Passat flywheel, T3 diesel engine bars and probably custom engine mount "arms".

So no need to find an expensive and rare T3 diesel bellhousing (or fuel tank, in the case of syncros) and no special flywheel, no expensive diesel input shaft...

All thanks to this part, which I hope to be re-manufacturing before too long, along with a flywheel machining/modifying service:

There will be a choice of drilling options e.g 52, 20 and 0 degrees and maybe a special 35-ish degree for semi-upright syncro installations.

Interested?

That looks very interesting, now for the plonk question, what is the min angle to avoid having to modify the engine hatch/ bed. but if the price can be reasonable definitely interested. Top marks :)

if they dont have them already then im sure it could sell well in the states, they like their auto boxes and this would help with fitting other engines to them. (i think??)
WHY T3's.... because they are just so adictive, and having one just aint enough

In a 2wd bus it's 52 degrees from vertical as per factory derv install, syncro has 20mm (?) more headroom so maybe 45 deg is possible depending on inlet manifold choice (modification or swapping for one like a Sharan 2.0 might help)

20 degrees seems to be the factory installation angle of choice for transverse (VW) or longitudinal (Audi) engines, so no sump or oil pickup mods if this angle is chosen (not a big deal really but a bit involved for anyone not into full-on engine building)

I wrote 35 deg for a syncro before as a possibility but that might be a little over-optimistic...

Ian it looks like an adapter from KEP http://kennedyenginc.com/ENGINEOPTIONLIST.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Maybe ask them if you could make the same over here under licence.

Thanks for the heads up, Dave, I don't want to go knowingly ripping off an outfit like Kennedy! However, I think that this plate pre-dates any of their products. It originally had a Mk3 Golf petrol engine bolted to it in a DOKA and the previous owner (who is a collector of rare VW parts) said that he's never seen one like it and he's seen a lot of stuff since his days at VW Commercials back in the 80's...
It's a bit of a mystery as it has no part number or maker's mark of any kind. The fact that it's made from cast alloy, not cut from billet like so many other conversion plates, is also a bit strange.

Thanks for the reply, so you would still need the diesel bars and sump/oil pump. but save on the bellhousing and starter, pooh plate etc

Yes you'll need the derv bars but they are plentiful on ebay.de Plus you save on the diesel gearbox input shaft too.

I might look into remaking JX alloy sumps too if there's demand/definitely unavailable from VW

That adapter looks like one that was available from a German outfit called Hoffmann or something similar around the late 80's early 90's. It was copied by someone called Kernow trikes down in Cornwall but not heard anything from them for years.

I shouldn't worry too much about a bit of plagiarism, the entire vehicle manufacturing industry is based upon it.
