Re: An Engine Rebuild Thread for Beginners

I think that the bit that won't shine is burnt - poor seal between valve and head lets hot gas and explosion out, burns valve, worse seal, less contact means more heat in valve, more burn and repeat. Slowly valve gets worse until you loose compression. Small crack there is normally fine, just see if...

Re: T25 Engine Opportunity

^^ What he said! You had one running issue, which you fixed. Then you had another issue with the clutch that you have failed to fix. There are limits to what can be wrong - and if I had to guess i would suggest your mechanic may have no idea what he was doing. It should cost you significantly less t...

Re: An Engine Rebuild Thread for Beginners

Good to hear you are back at it!

Personally I would replace all of the valves (or at least the exhaust valves as a minimum).

They have a very hard life and are prone to failure and aren’t that expensive (around £80 all in).

Saves you some cleaning time too!!

Re: noticed a small leak this morning

I received some criticism for this in the past, so feel free to ignore me! I had a similar small weep from a head seal, which I ‘fixed’ by smearing some sealant on the outside of the seal and head. As there is no real pressure behind these weepy type leaks it will hold for a reasonable length of tim...

Re: JP Exhaust vs VW Speedshop

They were new two years ago, fitted by PO when the heads were changed (have receipt).

Only issue is that he has used standard nuts which are mostly now rust.

Drilled some out before so not too phased by it, but would rather avoid it if I can. Dremel and nut splitters also at the ready.

Re: JP Exhaust vs VW Speedshop

Thanks all - for once I’m happy to have a 1.9 and not have to enter the world of dwarf filters.

Speedshop have emailed saying back in stock within the week, and there seems to be plenty of happy customers so leaning this way I think.

Will start spraying my nuts in preparation this weekend!!

Re: setting timing.

Assuming its a timing light with an inductive trigger, you can get this effect if you ignore the arrow on the clamp showing which way round to put it. I don't understand why it makes a difference, but it does. You may be more competent than my friend* though and not have made such a foolish error......

Re: clutch slave

My plastic pipe on top to fit on the slave is push fit ok not screw in or clamped just pushed in to the plastic pipe been there like that 33years You plastic pipe pushes onto a 'banjo' fitting as mentioned above. This is held on by a bolt and sealing washers. If you look at the plastic pipe on the ...

Re: Cut out when driving, none start, fuel pump rod suspect?

I had this problem, with both new rods and pumps being poor quality (on the T25, a beetle and a T2) Originals last 20+ years new ones manage the warranty period. Bought a GSF one in an emergency, only to find out it was too short new! Ended up with electric pumps as I got fed up with the constant fa...

Re: JP Exhaust vs VW Speedshop

Hi, I have the JP/ Just Kampers one. The quality is not bad for the money and it does the job, it's been on 3 years and no cracks or issues. It's a straight swap using the stock silencer hangers so easy to fit. Yes, the clamps are mild steel but you could swap them for stainless for relatively litt...

JP Exhaust vs VW Speedshop

Right lovely people, its new exhaust time (yay, I can already feel the head studs yielding under my spanner now...). Having read all the helpful guidance and seen whats actually in stock its come down to a choice of JP Exhaust (as stocked by them, VW heritage, Just Krappers and Cool Air) or VW Speed...

Re: Noisy tappets, collapsed lifters?

From experience, the ones you have taken out and are now putting back will reward you by collapsing in the next week or so. They don't seem to like attention! I'd definitely replace them all whilst you are doing it. I found a metal rod (old screwdriver) with a short coarse thread cut on the end coul...

Re: too smokey and poor tickover for mot

Right, lets start from the beginning. What 'old Aircooled' engine does it have in it? You've done plugs and given it fresh fuel, is timing ok and valve clearances checked? You had a gearbox change, was the engine fine before this? Likewise, before the oil change was it okay? Persistent white smoke s...
