Re: Spongey brakes Aircooled

Also, I try and avoid bleeding brakes by pressing the pedal, I simply gravity blead brakes with very little issue. Trouble can be that the piston(s) in the master cylinder, in normal operation only use a small portion of the master cylinder bore and that keeps them clean. You open a bleed nipple and...

Re: Spongey brakes Aircooled

Please also see the orientation of the brake adjust bar and how it connects to the brake shoe with the hand brake lever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0i4cKXA3Bm0 We often saw these on 180° out and usually done by folks that should know better. Mess that up and you'll end up with a poor handbrake,...

Re: Spongey brakes Aircooled

Yeah when I changed rear wheel cylinders, shoes and drums I bled the rear cylinders with a pressure bleeder at 12psi, adjusted the new shoes so the rear drums were dragging (using a bar to turn the drum on the rear studs), got in the van and applied the brakes several times and held for 10 seconds ...

Rosie n' Jim wrote: 09 Feb 2023, 07:04 As with most vehicles of their era, the self adjusting rear brakes don't! And hand brake adjustment is important too. Order of work is to back off the hand brake, adjust the self adjuster through the hole in the backplate, then adjust the hand brake. This made a huge improvement on my van.

Re: The great carb debate

I never had much joy with those carburettors. Some of the supplied hardware was too long and when you tightened down the carb on to the adapter the set screw bottomed out then and you continued to tighten unaware the new kit had the wrong set screws it bend the adapter wich then introduced an air le...

Re: Engine battery drain?

Some radios don't like their red and yellow connected together to a permenent live and they are always on, they don't go to sleep. I've always prfered to run them with an ignition live (15 / Black) to make sure that they power down properly. I appreciate that some people want to run their radio whil...

Re: looking for a decent battery .. 1989 Turbo Diesel

Buy a British standard type 100.
Also buy a smart charger and leave it pliugged in when the van is not in use.
Batteries don't like being left to go flat.

Re: LED Headlight options

I'm not sure if you have driven a T3 (or any vehicle for that matter) with LED headlamps but I do struggle with them. I put some of the Trucklight 7" ones in my syncro, soon took them out, the sharp cut off that  the beam pattern provides made driving difficult, at least with a round headlamp t...

Re: PAS Rack Rebuild Kit

The seal kit was originally made by ZF, whom made the steering rack. We used to have the ZF kit. The ZF kit is now obsolete. We then bought them from Classic parts, same contents, same bag, same marking, same thing. They then went obsolete from VW Classic parts so we now buy them from JP group. A fe...

Re: Oil cooler using mk1 golf gti filter housing

This way works but at the last look the thermostat element is not longer available so you need to make sure it's operational before you go to the effort of fitting it.
We have the correct unions for those fittings if required.
