mmm yeah the Aircooled gearbox linkage is different tot the watercooled as the gearboxes are different. I'm going through Anglesey on Friday the 28th Boat arrives at 6 am so could have a quick look at it to see if that's what it is? Youlll have to make me coffee though

Sounds like bearings (they are all 30 years old) and more than likely the mainshaft bearing moving forward in the case and your 5th gear rubbing on the back of the case. By the way, the gears are cut this makes the mainshaft want to go forward and away from the pinion shaft and wear down the stop in...

Sounds like a linkage problem try cleaning up, lubing and or renewing your gear linkage

So when cold the gearbox being a 4 speed defaults to 3rd and 4th and you have to move gearstick against spring pressure to get 1st and 2nd and down under the 'gate' to get reverse ? If it doesn't do this when hot then and you can't get it to select 3rd and 4th then I'm afraid it probably has a crac...
