Re-wire or relay?
Hi Occasionally when I turn the ignition key, the starter doesn't turn the engine. First happened a month ago - I could hear the starter solenoid click, but the engine wouldn't turn (original post here: http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=152210" onclick="window.open(this....

Re: Intermittent starting problem
Cured by a new (remanufactured) starter from Eurocarparts
Think it was probably the solenoid, but as I needed the van this weekend for a trip I didn't have time to mess around with it.

Re: Intermittent starting problem
Ok, with the ignition key in the 'start position', the resistance across the ignition switch (red and red/black terminals) is almost zero ohms, and the starter solenoid gets +12.3V, measured at the solenoid. I removed the starter and separated the motor from the solenoid. I noticed that two of the t...

Re: Intermittent starting problem
Thanks everyone for the replies. According to the history file it had a reconditioned starter motor fitted in April 2013. Last year I re-made all the earth connections and added an extra earth lead directly from the starter to the chassis. The battery is only a couple of years old and is decent qual...

Re: Brake drum issues with pulsing brake pedal
Yeah, hadn't thought of vacuum leak . So presumably there's a long vac hose running from the engine in the back to the servo upfront - plenty of scope for leaks there.

Re: Brake drum issues with pulsing brake pedal
Hi
I got the drums from Schofields in sept 2013. I'm fairly sure the pedal was pulsing when I bought the van, so I don't think the problem with my van is related to new drums
Cheers
Jim

Re: Brake drum issues with pulsing brake pedal
Got the exact same symptoms on my van: pulsing pedal on hard braking. I changed rear drums, cylinders etc as they were knackered/leaking, which improved braking efficiency but made no difference to the pedal. I just assumed it was a partially warped front disc(s). My discs/pads have plenty of life i...

Thanks for the reply Martin
There was certainly evidence of 'black rot' in the spade connection - I will check everything and report back

Intermittent starting problem
Hi I need help with an intermittent starter issue: sometimes when I turn the ignition key, the starter doesn't turn. All the dash lights come on, and there is a distinct click coming from the engine bay (starter solenoid?), but the starter does not turn. Usually, if I turn the ignition off and try a...

Re: New to spray painting - General advice and tips needed.
Hi Steve There is a lot of good DIY spray paint advice on http://www.mig-welding.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I've read that spraying 2-pack without a booth/air-fed mask is a no-no. Sounds like my van is in a similar condition to yours - seam rash here and there, a...

Re: Alternative instruments and switchgear
The BMW 2002 uses a remote dual servo brake set up. Front discs, rear drums. Plenty of owners have swapped to discs at the rear with no problems. The ATE servos are very pricey to refurbish, but this is a cheaper alternative: http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/compact-remote-brake-servo" onc...

Not sure about bypassing the ISCU. Seem to remember there being info on the US vanagon forums, or failing that, Bentley?

Re: Cold start stalling
Hi Dan Same position as the main ECU, but on the opposite side of the engine bay (drivers side). It's hidden behind the plastic panel where the air intake duct attaches. It's a small black box the size of a pack of 20 cigarettes, and there are a whole bunch of wires which connect into it. The termin...

Re: Cold start stalling
Hi I had similar problems last year (2.1 DJ), and found that checking/setting the ignition timing, and cleaning the terminals on the ISCU (small black box behind drivers side tail light) did the trick. If you google ISCU you will find some info on pin tests for the ISCU to test if it is working OK C...

Re: Claytonrite seals
Maybe some leg lifting going on :D , but it took them an hour, as I watched them do the job to see if I could learn anything. It was a very cold day and they were working outside on my drive, so that would have made the seal less supple. Plus I had welded in all-new window appetures so the fit proba...
