Re: start motor trouble - rounded hex head removal

If it's the same as an air-cooled starter, the nut is definitely in the engine bay. The head you think is rounded off is shaped to lock against the starter housing.

Re: Scraped the side of someones van :( how much?

Sounds a bargain. I scraped the neighbour's BMW, this plus a scratch to the tip of the mirror, and that cost £300 cash :(

Re: Best Battery and Charger for Standby Battery

(no offence to BOXY). None taken. I ended up with three panels as I picked them up "cheap" over a few months. They are wired in on long leads, via charge controllers, with quick release plugs. It means I can position them anywhere around the van when off-grid. In the summer it works prett...

Re: Best Battery and Charger for Standby Battery

Solar is ok if you can get sufficient light. I've got three panels in my van a 14W in the back and a couple of 20W on the work top. In the summer when I can leave them outside wild-camping they keep the batteries topped-up easily, but in the winter they can hardly keep up with the drain of the alarm...

Re: Best Battery and Charger for Standby Battery

If you keep running the battery flat (below 12.0v) you'll shorten its working life. That's why I said just get a couple of scrapyard batteries for a £10 each and it won't matter if you kill them. I've actually got a 75aH battery that is too big to fit under the seat just sat in the back of the van o...

Re: Best Battery and Charger for Standby Battery

Just buy a couple a batteries from a local scrap yard. If they're only being used to keep the alarm etc ticking over it will be the cheapest option. If the van has got hook-up can you use that to charge the batteries in-situ.

Re: quick dash cam q

I haven't got this version but my dual camera one records two separate files. One thing to check is the cable for the secondary camera is long enough to run under/through the van to the rear. Mine isn't is waiting for me to bodge up an extension.

Re: Sterilisation of water tank

I don't understand the fuss people make about sterilising tanks. I keep water in my tank all year around. Sometimes its chlorinated mains water, but more often than not its bore-hole water from a random camp-site. I've never had any sign of anything growing in the tank. I changed all the pipe-work t...

VW supplied Camping bodyshell (Kombi/Caravelle without interior).

Is that what the CAMPING badge denotes?

Re: Propex options... inside or out?

Autohomes fitted my Propex under the van, despite the warning label says not for external fitting. It lasted about 30 years though ;)

Re: Sergy's Electrics!

My first "leisure" batteries were standard starter batteries bought for a tenner a go from the local scrap-yard. At that price it was cheaper to kill one every year and get another, than to fit a proper leisure battery. When I'm camping I don't use any high demand electrical items, and the...

Re: Won't start...idiot check.

If that voltage drop is just by turning the key to the first position, where there shouldn't be any real load to pull the voltage down, then the battery iffy. Check the voltage as you turn everything on one by one. By the sounds of it by the time you've got your lights, wipers and radio on you'll ha...
