Re: Aircooled atutobox, is it the same as watercooled?

The gearing is a bit shorter on the Aircooled and there is no cooler on it for the fluid. Having never seen one I am not sure if there is still the outlets for the fluid but plugged up or not. If there are you could use an external cooler and live with the gearing which isn't too different. I believ...

Re: Automatic Gearbox advice

I have heard that it is quite difficult to find someone to do these boxes now and that parts are scarce, so I'm thinking of getting mine done despite the fact that it works ok at present incase in the future the parts can't be found. I suspect a couple of bearings are worn in mine together with seal...

Re: Automatic Gearbox advice

The Auto does sap the power a bit and it likes to stay in the high gears a bit too long. There is not much between the ratio's and it relies on the torque convertor to do alot of the work. 40-50 on a reasonable long motorway incline is about Par for the course and a good 1:10 will have you under 30 ...

Re: WBXlog

My DJ produces approx 20 PSI at HOT idle with 20/40 semi in. Thats with oil temp about 90 degrees. As soon as I rev up and cruising at 2000rpm its about 50PSI . At 3500 rpm and hot it is around 65/70 PSI. I have just rebuilt it using a crank with no measurable wear and a standard set of bearings. Yo...

Re: 2.2 Big bore motor with a Pierburg?

I use super unleaded when not on gas so that the timing can remain at 10-12 BTDC. On normal unleaded I have to retard to 6-8 BTDC otherwise when it gets hot working hard it Pings.

Re: 2.1 replacement for 1.9 DG

I forgot to say that in my DG I reused the stretch bolts after careful measurement somewhere online I found a guide that told you how to check them for length. It managed 30000 miles without any problems and was nice and tight when I stripped it again to rectify an oilway blockage problem. Maybe a 2...

Re: 2.1 replacement for 1.9 DG

HI , I used the rods from the 2.1 DJ donor and removed the stretch bolts. Instead I used normal bolts non stretch from VW heritage. The rods from the 2.1 donor were identical to those from the original 1.9 case but were less worn at the small end so Rather than replace the small ends in the 1.9 rods...

Re: More torque out of a 1.9DG

What about a bit of turbocharging, now that would increase the torque.

Re: 2.2 Big bore motor with a Pierburg?

I don't think the extra 0.5mm in bore size would be noticeable over a 2.1 especially with only a pierburg on it. On top of this most 2.2 big bore kits have a lower compression ratio than the DJ 2.1 which will also loose you a bit of power, I suppose at least you could probably run on normal unleaded...

Re: Rear wheel bearing carriers

Mine had a new bearing fitted on the rear right as the old bearing was very noisy. The MOT garage did the bearing for me as I was unwell at the time. After which they passed it on the MOT but the following year the tester called me round to see the play on this same bearing, Quite a clunk up and dow...

2.1 replacement for 1.9 DG

As some of you may know I recently, well last summer replaced my 1.9 DG with a 2.1 DJ crank and pistons as well as cam shaft after which I had no end of tappet problems and breaking valve spring problems. After a full set of new valve springs and about 2500 miles under it's belt all done locally I f...

Re: Knocking sound under load

I had this problem once and it turned out to be one of the driveshafts knocking on the inside of the drive flange. The shafts need to be centralised within the cv joints and the the boots positioned and tightened so that the shaft will not move far enough inwards or outwards to hit either the inner ...

Re: WBXlog

Yes my new tappets have now done 2000 miles and still when I leave the bus for more than 20 mins or so the ones under valve spring pressure drain down which means you always have a rattle on start up with a bit of uneven running. The converse is also true in that they pump up quickly within a mile f...
