I vote on the leisure battery. I think it is not obvious that the van has a leisure battery or a GPS tracker connected to it.

Re: Gear box sump plug
Heat the aluminum around the plug with a small propane torch, it will work.
But be careful not to burn anything else

Re: JX to AAZ conversion
the original pump for the AAZ is better, because it has smoother LDA, but the JX pump will do, especially with some tweaking on the fuel quantity
(the LDA manages the extra fuel on turbo load)

Re: Do Golf parts fit
Sometimes when I am after some part, just search in ETKA for all models (ATP search if you have ETKA)
But not easy to get ETKA (or ETOS)
or you can search here online: http://www.vagcat.com/epc/ (unfortunately the search is unavailable this time for some reason)

Re: maintenance chargers
I have same charger. Mine has a problem that you cannot switch to charge with the mode button. You have to wait for some mins is standby before you can change the charging mode. But sometimes the waiting not works.
But it has 3 year guarrantee, so if i can find the bill I will get the money back
