Re: Wiring Query

Thanks - I guess this was more than curiosity really: I have a leisure battery which charges from a "Smart Relay" (which also drives the fridge). I think the idea is that when the engine's running the relay flips on, and when it stops running the relay flips off again. However, if the leis...

Wiring Query

Just curiosity really - my starter battery has 2 leads attached to the +ive terminal, plus an extra one that feeds the camping interior. There's 1 big thick lead which I presume feeds the engine compartment, starter, instruments etc ... and then there's a thinner red lead ... anyone know what it's f...

Burning Oil

I came home in the van the other day, and my partner needed to take the van out again straight away, so I left the engine running. Went inside then came out again, and there was a stench of burning oil. The exhaust was really smoky. As my partner headed off down the road, clouds of smoke out of the ...

Re: Paint Codes

Wow, what a nightmare! Really helpful links. I think I've narrowed it down to 2 possible colours!! I'll just order 1 of each! Thanks

Paint Codes

Hi - The previous owner of my van took it to a paint shop for a custom 2-tone spray, but both have lost the details of the paint codes used. The paint shop say they'd have used genuine vw paints appropriate for the model (caravelle) and year (1983). I've had a look at "paint codes" in the ...

Re: Brake pressure loss

Thanks everybody for your contributions - And the Winner Is: Gunslinger with the Wrong hub bearing!! All fixed and working now, just got to get my money back from the idiot mechanic who fitted the wrong bearing in the first place. I would have forgiven him if the last thing I'd said to him wasn't: &...

Re: Brake pressure loss

I've now had the back wheels off and had a good look. The adjusters are definitely mounted properly, and I've tightened up the adjustment - probably more than I should. Oddly, it's much more reliable when running now, but the first time I use the foot brake after the van's been standing for 15 minut...

Re: Brake pressure loss

Thanks for the ideas - Sticking brake definitely not the problem - sometimes it happens just 10 seconds after setting off in the van in the morning - 20 yds down the road. Rear brake adjustment could well be the problem, I had no idea this was so critical, or that things could be mounted the wrong w...

Brake pressure loss

Strange things are afoot here! Apparently simple problem: every 4th or 5th push on the brake pedal and suddenly the pedal gives way like one of the brake circuits has failed completely ... starts to push after about 1/2 way down, but braking much reduced. Doesn't hit the floor though, unless complet...

Thanks for the info

Thanks folks for your contributions. I did all the obvious tests - put an isolator switch on the starter, and then on the leisure, but no evidence of current drain or battery damage on either. At first I thought it was the split charge relay sticking on, but the starter only drains while the van is ...

Upgrading Alternator

This question seems so simple, nobody seems to have got round to asking it before: I have a 1983 1.9 petrol T25 converted caravelle. After camping up for a few days and running down the leisure battery, then running the van for a couple of hours, the starter battery is discharged ... turns out the a...
