Turns out the torque converter was loose and clanking around.
Luckily no damage done and the 3 bolts holding it on tightened up.

Auto gearbox clank!
Hi,
I have 1982 2.0 Aircooled T25 with an automatic gearbox.
Whilst driving it the gearbox wouldn’t change up automatically and then CLANK. Sounds like a bag of spanner’s.
The sound is still there while it ticks over in Park.
Transmission oil level is ok.
Is the gearbox toast?

I have just replaced the discs, pads and bearings on my t25 and found the pads and discs quite a reasonable price from brickworks.
The SKF bearings are expensive, but quality, the cheap ones are made of cheese and are just false economy.
