Re: More Water Problems - HELP

Thanks SS,
When it first broke down the temp gauge was bang on centre and no low level coolant light on. Surely if it was getting hot the temp gauge would indicate this?

More Water Problems - HELP

Replaced water pump, thermostat, header tank cap (genuine VAG) then all of the water jacket seals. Reason for all this was water pushing back out of the top up tank and all over the road after about 20 miles of driving. Recent easter trip was a disaster as broke down twice due to the same problem. H...

HELP - Stripped Threads

After spending the last few months trying to get the van on the road I have now come across yet another of the previous owners bodges. Decided to give the van an oil change tonight ready for our first camping trip tomorrow (Saturday) only to discover the oil drain plug was only just finger tight. On...

Thanks RR.
Will be out first thing in the morning to have another play. I have an excellent mechanic also coming round to lend a hand but would like a head start.

Radiator Cooling Fan Plug

Under the front of the van earlier with the spare wheel out and carrier lowered. Noticed the back of the cooling van behind the radiator had a 6" or so length of wire(s) with a plug on the end just hanging there. Couldn't see anywhere for it to attach to??? Any ideas. Oh and its a 1984 1.9cc wa...

Where's My Gears Gone?

Whilst doing a 15 mile journey today I lost 3rd & 4th gear for the last mile. Was fine before. No noise from box or smells. 1st, 2nd and reverse all select fine. Had a good look underneath and found the selector box thingy on the underside of the van was loose and only just held on by 2 nuts. Re...

Sensible Mods to Increase Performance

Had a readup on old threads etc. Its a 1984 1.9cc watercooled Holdsworth Hightop. Took the van out on Saturday for its longest journey since owning it...a whopping 15 miles!! While i appreciate it old technology lugging around a 2 1/2 tonne brick, is there any sensible changes i can make to improve ...

Re: Oil in expansion and coolant reservoir..

Nad same problem on my old 2.1 last year. Now you've got the old cooler off i'd replce it anyway. To test the cooler I filled it with white spirit then plugged one of the hose connection points and adapted a rubber bung to fit the other connection. I then used my foot pump to pressurise the contents...

Re: Brakes Binding - Alloys ???

Sounds pretty sensible Mark. With the caliper off the van what do you mean when describing freeing them off? Apologies in advance but not had the pleasure of working on the brakes before.

Brakes Binding - Alloys ???

Going to have a look at the front brakes on our 1984 1.9 hightop tomorrow. Just a thought before I jump in feet first. The vans running on 15" Ford Scorpio alloys with 205/55 tyres. Not aware that its got spacers on any of the wheels (was on van when bought and not taken wheels off front yet). ...

Re: Correct coolant level sensor and removal

If you are struggling toget at the hexagon on the sensor then I am guessing that you still have the expansion tank on the van? i also struggled with this and ended up cap off the undoing the two rubber coolant hoses jubilee clips. I then unscrewed the expansion tank off of the metal mounting plate. ...

Re-Covering Cupboards

Our van is a 1984 Holdsworth hightop. The interior looks pretty sound and solid but has one major problem. The previous owner decided to paint over the 1980's retro wood look cupboards with a nice shade of dog sh*t brown gloss paint!!! :x Don't want the hassle or expense of replacing the whole inter...
