Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
Conclusion of this long monologue just in case some else has the same symptoms : was the fuel pump (which was almost new though) which blocked when hot.

Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
Happened again yesterday after a long drive back from Dorset but this time I managed to have a look at it and surprise : the flap was fully open!

Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
Hi Kev Back from holiday :-) Got the camper back from the garage - the guy couldn't find anything wrong with it. We took it for the week end and it worked fine. I stopped for a few minutes on the motorway and it restarted without problems but once we got home we unpacked it and I started it again to...

Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
Thanks Kev From cold the flap does not open is this the case? It did not open when I started the engine and left it idling for 6 mins. The mechanic who's looking at it today said that it is normal and it opens only when pressing the pedal while driving (see previous post) [...] When you looked at th...

Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
Update : took the can to the garage and the mechanic could not find anything wrong with it ?!?! He suggested that maybe I had been accelerating too much on idle - and that's what flooded it. He also said that the flap should open only when we start pressing on the accelerator and not when idling. I...

Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
Thanks again for your help Kev, much appreciated. So, I've just tried measuring the voltage again, this time connecting to the choke housing. From cold, turned the key to connect the battery but did not start the engine. Reading gave me 11 something briefly then I think I heard some sort of noise (c...

Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
a black wire with a white connector, is this connected to a yellow connector? a white one actually, see below 20160713_114838.jpg I measured the voltage later on, not sure how to do it but I connected one lead of the meter to the inside of the connector and the other lead to the large metal structu...

Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
Thanks Kev and marlinowner. I will check the voltage tomorrow.
BTW Any reason not to do what marlinowner suggested and simply remove the flap?
are you suggesting that I remove the housing completely or just undo the screws and check that it rotates ok?this mechanism should be free to move

Re: choke problem with Pierburg carb
Thanks Kev, Here's how it looks when starting from cold 20160712_163225.jpg and 6 minutes later 20160712_163809.jpg no great difference as you can see. It does not flap about and springs back to its position as far as I can tell. Am I right in thinking that there such a thing as fast-idling? I think...

choke problem with Pierburg carb
Hi, I know there are quite a few threads about the Pierburg carb but I haven't found one which corresponds to the problem I have. Apologies if I missed something. My camper is a 2.0 petrol with a Pierburg 2E carburetor. I've had the same issue on and off for a while now despite several visits to the...

Re: Weird friction noise
Verdict : it was the water pump indeed. The people at the garage also gave the van a good service. Not certain changing a water pump should take 4 hours but here we go... Thanks again for your help @kev. Will bite the bullet one day and have a look at how the choke works. BTW Would be fab to find so...

Re: Weird friction noise
As your not technical, I guess you have to pay for investigation/elimination by the garage.? Or will you be trying yourself, as VW intended.? :D Both. Am not going to understand the beast better if I don't try. I'll still take it to the garage though : the pump issue is probably unrelated to the ot...

Re: Weird friction noise
Thanks Kev. Will give it a try. Could that explain or be related to the other symtoms mentioned?

Weird friction noise
Hi, My van is a '89 petrol. I noticed not long ago that it makes a sort of friction sound which seems to be more audible whent I open the hatch at the back. Here is a video of it https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxqnJCOgbOC6QWdGSXp4R1JKajQ/view?usp=sharing , the sound quality is not great. I am pret...
