as a last resort ..and I mean make sure its not wires/connections first as you will still have the same problems with a new one.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STARTER-MOTOR-VW-TRANSPORTER-MK-III-1-7-D-1985-1992-LRS00662/310873373734?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DS...

Re: Starter Motor? 1.6 diesel non turbo, manual

No..they are specific to the t25..all other types have different bell housings. I think a little more investigation as to why it needs a tap to make it work is needed...they are the simplest job of all to remove. it still might just be electrical connections/earths take a wire with a connector on it...

Re: Starter Motor? 1.6 diesel non turbo, manual

Clip a jump lead from the negative terminal on the battery to the body of the solenoid to see if it's an earth problem. It could also be the braided connection between the solenoid and the starter motor or even the trigger wire to the solenoid

Re: 1.6 diesel install

get it in and manually wire the glow plugs for now..run a 12v feed to the pump solenoid ...put a can of diesel up high above the engine and run that to your fuel filter..don't bother with new belts or anything new till you know it starts and sounds ok
