Re: Rot around the jacking point and many other places. How bad?
Material value v emotional value? Emotion wins I think - especially if I get 10 years out of it. Besides, I don't have the cash at hand to replace it. So if what I think is correct, I'll need rust free cuts for.... The roof section above sliding door? https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_PqXhfM...

Re: Rot around the jacking point and many other places. How bad?
Damn. I was hoping that Volksrepairs were exaggerating slightly. Thanks for the honest opinion though. What bits cause you most concern? Presumably the roof over the sliding door and the bit on the top corner of the windscreen? When you say it's beyond economic repair are you calculat...

Re: Cleaning Gearbox
My plan was to spray it with 'something suitable' once it was cleaned. Is that a bad idea, maybe more trouble than it's worth?
I say 'something suitable' as I'm not sure what to spray it with just yet.

Cleaning Gearbox
Quick question.
I've removed my gearbox to replace the flywheel oil seal. The box is absolutely filthy, is it safe to blast it with a power washer? Do I need to take care when power washing particular bits?

Re: Rot around the jacking point. It it bad?
Thanks for the replies. :D It was stored indoors for 2.5 years and outside for almost a year over a really nasty winter. Got taken out in Aug 2012 and was to be collected by someone who turned out to be a complete moron. It sat there (or so I thought at the time) until Nov 2012 thanks to the morons ...

Rot around the jacking point and many other places. How bad?
Hey After a long time apart (4 years -long story involving court cases and a contract breaching b@5t@rd claiming to be a reputable vehicle transporter)I've been reunited with my van. So I set about starting to do all the jobs I'd been meaning to do before it was put into storage. 1st on the list was...

Re: my attempt at replacing a gearbox
Never tried the diesel approach for un-seizing but I recently replaced and engine in my Saab 9000 and found this stuff to work a real treat http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_274625_langId_-1_categoryId_165594 I'd nearly rounded a nut tr...

Re: Just a quick brake question or two
Well, I got my caliper but I got sent the wrong side  so I decided to push the piston back and forward for about 15 mins. The sticky caliper was so much easier to push back than the first time when we were using an extension bar on the rewind tool. Was able to do it by hand this time and the ...

Re: Just a quick brake question or two
Out of interest, and just a thought, is there no way to strip the caliper(s), clean, lubricate and rebuild them with new seals, springs etc etc? I had a similar sticking problem on mine, but it's the early model with twin pistons, used to squeal like biatch when you really worked the brakes on stee...

Re: Just a quick brake question or two
Really? Wow, that's just great. You don't know which ones are which? I got mine in Euro Car Parts. Can't remember which brand they were though.... I hope they'll wear to to the correct thickness pretty quickly if I've got the thick ones. I'm sure the new disks are not helping things either. N...

Re: Just a quick brake question or two
Thanks for the quick replies fellas. At least it's only the one caliper mucking about.
What I think I'm going to do is replace the sticky one with a 2nd hand one, see what it's like and if it fails the MOT next month or feels unsafe in any way I'll replace the pair with recons.
Thanks again
Conrad

Just a quick brake question or two
Just changed the disks and pads and I suspect I have at least 1 sticky caliper. Should there be any contact between the pads and disks when the brakes are released? The drivers side on mine sticky I suspect. The caliper was a complete buggar to rewind and I can't really turn the disk by hand when th...

Re: Crickets (angry ones), mainly when I turn right.
Well I got the brake cleaner out today and took the wheels off to see what was happening. Turns out it's being caused by the remains of the splash guard on the drivers side which has become all gunked up and is rubbing on the disk. I've cleaned it up a bit and am going to remove what remains of the ...

Re: Crickets (angry ones), mainly when I turn right.
Thanks for the replys. As I pulled into work today I heard exactly the same noise only much louder coming from the brakes as I applied them. I think it could be time to change the pads? Am I making this up or is this next statement true? - pads are designed to squeal a bit when they're worn so you k...
