That's where I am going wrong. I need to go on a diet, get rid of the kids and have a good cleanout before each trip. I might then be able to improve on my 26 mpg.

Re: Driving with full water tank

I find that breathing in when going uphill helps. Seriously though, some of the suggestions here must be so marginal. I have standard kit on board that I take everywhere. The awning, for example. I really could not be fagged to take the thing in and out of the van all the time having considered whet...

Re: Northwest France - Camping/place ideas

There is a camping site at Mont Saint Michael which we used this summer. It is on the mainland just before you take the causeway for the Mont. The toilet block was nice and clean and the site was quiet. There are a number of restaurants there specialising in sea-foods. I had some reasonably priced h...

Re: Really last minute recommendations for stone henge area

Just turn up and camp in the middle of the ring. No problem. Seriously, there is not a lot going on on Salisbury Plain itself. About the nearest site is Tilshead, 01980 620402 but there is bugger all to do there as the population is about 500 and all they have is a pub and a bus stop. You are much b...

Having a purely electric fridge will limit you to camping on sites with an electric supply. Do you have an electric hookup?

Re: seam rust advice (picture) for newbie

Agreed. An idiot's guide would be much appreciated. I last did this sort of thing 30 years ago when I had my first couple of rust heaps. Since then, I have traded my cars in before any work on the bodywork was required. Now having a 26 year old vehicle the situation is different. I can see some rust...

Re: Best speed for fuel?

Best economy is braking as little as possible (too many brake last minute - use your gearbox to slow down too) and let the vehicle build up speed gently. Be in the right gear and DON'T carry onboard things you don't need all year round. You're paying otherwise. Motorways I can pootle at 60 but abov...

Re: westfalia fabric - washing

I have a Devon Moonraker. Some of the bed cushions are zipped and I decided to wash them. A real bugger to get off and an even worse job to get them on again. I washed on a low heat and low spin to be on the safe side. Worth the effort but a real fag. I borrowed my brother's carpet cleaner to do the...

Re: Best speed for fuel?

I get 26mpg in my 83 1900cc watercooled. This is averaged out over about 1200 miles in France this summer. On ordinary roads I do about 50mph max, often less. On motorways I try not to go over 60. This was 3 up with all our gear for a fortnight. I am gentle on the accelerator and take my foot off we...

Re: low coolant light "relay 43" where to buy?

There's one on Ebay for 99p. I've found a used one for £19.95 from a breaker, can't see one for 99p. Really, I was hoping to get a new one, looks like there's no such thing! Re: NON BOOKABLE CAMPSITES?!

To be quite honest, I never book. I have camped in the UK and in France under canvas and now with the van and have never had any real difficulty getting a site. I never plan more than a day in advance and just take it as it comes. The BH weekend may be a bit of an issue with the popular sites but in...

Re: pop top wont stasy popped.

It looks very much like my moonraker top. The bars on the inside look the same and the concertina fabric has the same colouring. From the bottom photo I think I can just make out the upper clips on the roof. there should be lug or whatever the clip attaches to, on the bodywork of the van. A similar ...

I suppose it does depend a bit on how full a fill up is but it does give a bit more confidence.
