gear oil has a distinctive smell, have a sniff of both engine oil and gear oil and see which one it smells like. Dont be sniffing any other stuff though

If you do have to undo any nuts on cyl head studs don't just apply more and more pressure. If they're tight use heat (pref. oxy/acetyline) to heat the nut or if not drill down side of nut with a new good quality drill bit and open drilled hole with sharp chisel to remove nut then run a die nut down ...

Yes the trade doesn't like to make too much fuss about it as it kind of offsets one of of the main advantages with diesel engines. This together with the fact that diesel engines really need a turbo to have any kind of performance persuades me to stick with petrol until something better comes along...

The strainer is under the centrally located plate held with a single fastening. Its like an Aircooled beetle one but slightly smaller, you'll need a gasket kit and wash it out with petrol. grease the gaskets before refitting to prevent them sticking like the proverbial stuff to a blanket.

Its the spring under the button that pushes the pawl teeth to engage with the ratchet so I look at why thats not happenning.

My 82 devon pop top was Elfenbein (creamish) on the inside and Chianti Red (deep rich red ) on outside. The cream came down as far as to include the sliding door mechanism cover. The red went inside door shuts along the wheel arch touching the rubber mat and up to waist height level with sliding doo...
