Thanks again for all the support over this - really helpful and very reassuring! Having a break over the weekend as we're going away (camping without the van, boo!) but through the boards have managed to find someone with most of a CU engine in bits in their shed - hopefully they'll have the cooler ...

Well, I'm pleased to see I've prompted some excitement, confusion and debate over the crankshaft seal! Managed to remove the fan housing and oil cooler today - very messy with all the old oil knocking around. However, the fan itself was almost completely clean, as was the immediate rear of the fan o...

Thanks for all your replies. Removed the suspect cylinder head today and #3 exhaust valve is quite heavily recessed, so looks like it's time for a new head. hmmm, an electric pump would be cheaper than that, so I'm not sure it's worth the bother. i'd really value some opinions from others who have replaced the pump, i know it can be a bit of a minefield getting the right one and I don't want to mess up! basically, I just need to know what sort of electr...

blinkin' fuel pump
Replaced the fuel lines on the van today after it had been standing for a while, spurred on by the fine weather and a desire to actually use it rather than just swear at it. It's a 1980 2l Aircooled. At some point the mechanical pump failed and an electric pump was fitted - a bit of a bodge job judg...
