Timing and the advance
Hello all, I have just done my timing; Got the engine up to temp first Disconnected the idling unit and connected the two plugs together Disconnected the vacuum advance ( single vacuum DF) Set the timing so the ignition dimple was in line with the seam crank case So I reconnected the idling unit and...

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Okay, I'll go through some literature. The only reason this had come up is because a garage told me I need an engine rebuild because my compression was low. Then a combination of friends, people on here and another garage said that should be a last resort and you could probably get an extra 10% powe...

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Ah okay, not really sure what preload is. I was just going to check the distances with a feeler gauge and adjust accordingly. As you may be able to tell I've not really read up on it yet. Thanks for the info tho, saves me thinking I've written the van off.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Just to cap this thread off for anyone viewing in the future. I tried the new dizzy with the faulty vacuum unit replaced on it. The van runs perfectly, I can really tell the difference when accelerating, it's so much smoother, also I had to kind of "tease" my foot of the accelerator before...

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Just a quick update on this saga. The vacuum unit didn't work on the dizzy, sucked and there was no movement and no vacuum was created. Popped the old one back in, timed it, van running fine. Gonna get this one sorted and have another go of fitting it. Quick one, the van is at TDC, number 1 piston i...

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Oh right, that's a shame, thought I'd figured it out. Thanks for the info.
Just to confirm, there's the possibility I has the engine at tdc while the number 3 piston was firing, that's when I installed the dizzy and did the timing. This shouldn't cause a problem?

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
I've just had a think, is my timing 180 degrees out? It's the first time I've replaced a dizzy and done timing. My symptoms are: Engine occasionally backfires Lots of power and jerky acceleration Struggles to go over 40mph Send to be running much hotter (can't confirm that for definite, only noticed...

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Okay, I'll do that, am I okay spending about a tenner on one or would you spend more? Kind of falling out of love with the van at the minute, really wish I could solve this problem. Gonna do a 250 mile round trip over the weekend really hope it holds up. :run Why do you say your hunch is it wouldn't...

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Helloall, just an update. We go away tomorrow so I decided to get the van in the garage to give it a once over. They tried all the stuff mentioned on here including stripping the carb down as it had a slight leak on it. Anyway, it's bad news :( they did a compression test and all four cylinders have...
