Post script - had local garage put new Bosch starter in and it has worked perfectly for a year. GSF refunded me for a faulty refurbished starter that one practically shorted out the battery.

Thanks. I think I will just replace the whole assembly. Apparently the bush can be persuaded out using an expandable Rawl plug. Is there another trick as access is a problem?

I removed the Shift Linkage Housing and can now find what Ithink is 1st & 2nd. The only obvious signs of wear are the pair of plastic shift guides.
