tell me if I'm wrong about this but... surely if you're putting a battery in the engine compartment it makes more sense for that to be the starter battery? won't it be nearer the starter motor and thus need a shorter wire (lower resistance = higher voltage = better starting) I agree I was going to ...

I' not a expert by any means, but is sounds like the van is getting to hot in the first place. The radiator and/or fan might be at fault here. The fan should stop the water temp going over half way. I would jack the van up get it on stands. Get undearneath and get someone to use the steering. Then pin point the cluncking. Could be as simple as a loose bolt on the steering rack. be care to jack the van up pon the chassis and use at least 3 tonn stands. Its not that complicated undearneath there.

you are probably right....however speed cameras make speedos (not the trunks) necessary.
