Re: Leaking water pipe
Checked with a a couple of VW spares stockists here on Gran Canaria and just got a shake of the head and sharp intake of breath. Looks like it will have to wait until May which is my next trip to the UK. Using my limited mechanical skills, I'm thinking of draining the coolant and removing the hoses ...

Re: Leaking water pipe
I'm assuming the metal inserts are corroded as there is a lot of gungy, rusty crud where it's leaking at
the join.

Re: Leaking water pipe
Thanks for the link. I'll track them down when i'm back in the UK in May. Does the rubber hose
from the radiotor fit directly onto the plastic pipe, or is there some kind of metal sleeve?

Leaking water pipe
I need to replace the water hoses that run from the radiator to the hard white plastic pipes on a 1990 2.1 DJ. Anyone know what length/diameter i will need? The van is in a friends garage up in the hills here on Gran Canaria, so would like to have the hoses ready to replace when i remove the old hos...

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Finally! After a six week wait for the small water pipe, which the local VW main dealer here on Gran Canaria tracked down in Spain, everything is back together and after a few longish runs appears to be running okay. Thanks to everyone who pointed the mechanically challengd in the right direction. A...

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Thanks, Kevtherev.
Someone here on Gran Canaria will make one from stainless steel for around 80 Euros. Have you han much experience
with the supplier in France?

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
A quick update re my battle with the coolant pump. After a bit of sawing (rusty bolts) and huffing and puffing, managed to get the pump off with the small metal pipe attached. Had to cut the lower allen key bolt (pipe to pump) but was much easier with the pump removed. Removed the big pulley to make...

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Thanks for offering to help out, Kevtherev. I'll try to get this one repaired locally. If t can't be welded, i'll try the want
ad as suggested.
When i refit the pipe is it okay to use jubilee clips on the short section of rubber hose? I don't fancy fighting
with those VW circlips again.

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Removed the big pulley without too many problems and removed the pump with the pipe attached. Had to resort to hacksawing the stubborn allen key bolt, but managed to get the pipe off in one piece. There's a whole (about the size of a pea) near the flange and a crack where it joins the flange. Neil, ...

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Thanks, Kevtherev.
Cutting the pipe off near the flange (wher it is corroded) would be the easiest option, but with no new or used
pipes here on Gran Canaria, i need to remove it complete in the hope that it can be repaired.

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Finally took the hacksaw to the allen bolt on the large water pipe. I've got everything loose except the lower allen bolt on the small water pipe, which looks like it will also need cutting off. I was hoping i could remove the pump with the small pipe attached, but it doesn't seem possible as there ...

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Having made a complete mess of the head of the bolt trying every method under the sun to loosen it, my only option
now is to saw it off. I think i can get a small hackswaw blade between the head of the bolt and the washer, and fingers crossed
it should be possible to pull the pipe off the pump.

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Possibly, but with the allen key welded into the bolt head - and assuming it loosened - you would only get about half a turn
before coming up against the pipe and needing to remove the allen key.

Re: Replacing water pump on 2.1 DJ
Thanks. I managed to loosen the top allen hey bolt on the large water pipe (top left of the pump) yesterday. I didn't remove it all the way, thought it would come out without much trouble when i continued today. Wouldn't budge when i tried today. Impossible to remove it with allen key as insert is r...
