The engine was in it when I bought it. The needle has always sat at about halfway between cold and the red coolant light. If I turned on the lights or the fan blower it would go down into the "cool" area, but come back up again when they were turned off. Just got used to it in the end. I h...

Have now replaced the faulty new sensor with a working sensor. Also exposed some nice shiny copper threads on the wire and attached them to a new spade connector. I am now getting a reading but the needle isn't going up as high as it used to (it used to sit about 1/2 way up to the left of the red li...

Sorry, didn't explain it very well. I should have said "strands" not wires (told you I'm not technical!). It is just one wire which is attached to the spade connector!

I'll have a degree in mechanical electrics soon!

Hi AngeloEvs! Thanks for the advice. Will try what you say in the morning (my van isn't here with me). The wires into the spade connector do look a bit iffy so I will tidy them up first and see what happens. Also, how do I check the engine block has a good earth? Where should I be looking? Will let ...

Temperature gauge still not working

Hi All Following on from my previous technical question my gauge still doesn't work. The advice from AngeloEvs was correct, but (and this is why I'm not a mechanic!) effectively all I did the other other day was to earth the wire against the engine block as per a normal circuit test rather than impr...

Hi All Thanks for all the replies and advice, seem to have started a bit of a debate here! After reading what AngeloEvs said about the sender earthing straight from the block I managed to solve the problem. When my mechanic changed the sender he said it should have a washer to help prevent damage wh...

Thanks for the reply Don't really know as I am another mechanical know-nothing! I have a mechanic for anything technical, but he says that if the gauge works when I rub the connector against the engine it can't be the wiring at fault. The engine is running fine and the radiator fan goes off and on s...

Temperature gauge not working

My temperature guage has decided to stop working. Have checked the wiring by rubbing the spade connector against the engine block and the temp guage rises slowly, so I assume the wiring/earths/dashboard connector are all ok. I changed the temperature sensor as I guessed this wasn't working, but the ...

Re Dashboard Woes

Thanks for the replies.
Had a quick search but couldn't find anything specific. Off to Exmoor for a few days today so will investigate a bit more on my return

Cheers

dashboard woes

My First posting, please be gentle..... I have a 1985 1.9 diesel(1Y) autohomes hightop Can anyone tell me if it is possible to swap an old instrument cluster (the one with the vertical pin mounting) for a newer one with the horizontal pin mounting? I have the old one, but it is falling apart and is ...
