is it a 4 or 5 speed box ? sounds like either your linkage is worn including the ball and or cup and tips and or your a spline out. As Multisi has said drop off the linkage and you should be able to engage all gears by hand if not the box needs a rebuild

Could be q numer of things firstly gear linkage bushes and set up. After that its gearbox related, possibly a combination of all below mainshaft bearing movement, wear in case allowing play where relay lever goes and heavy wear on third gear and synchroniser ring and syncro ring also play in pinion ...

looks like its from the throttle shaft easy enough to repair brickwerks sells a kit for the jx pump but i think it fits the aaz one aswell but ask before ordering just in case heres some more info based on a landy pump but they are both bosch pumps so the same principle https://www.aulro.com/afvb/te...

replace all the linkage components first, and change your oil if it persists your fourth gear is probably knackered from not changing down on hills other codes are here http://vwt3.com/t3-tech/t3-data/t3-gearbox-codes/ but the page has one or two mistakes so dont take it as gospel

Really sorry to have not got there (again), did get halfway this time. Fortunately we stopped in serves the station on the M4 and noticed oil on under the van, turns out to be my gearbox oil, gears seem to be OK so hopefully no damage however I was not going to drive it any further so home on the A...
