Re: Ignition wiring

I've managed to get a replacement loom from another member - hopefully winging its way to me now. I'm also replacing the coil. Seems that I'll have just about replaced everything except the ditributer itself, no doubt that'll be the next component to go on the blink.

Cheers
Donald.

Re: Ignition wiring

Here are a couple of images of the wiring loom that goes from the distributer (small connector) to the ignition control chip (large connector goes to electronic thing mounted on side of engine bay). I am going to replace this and also the ignition coil and see if that gets me going again. Cheers Don...

Ignition wiring

I need to replace the ignition wiring that runs between the Hall sender unit on the dizzy and the ICU chip (1985 1.9 wbx). It has a special connectors at each end and they don't seem to be available 'off the shelf' - the one that fits into the Hall sender looks a bit knackered. Any info on where I m...

Yes. Testing the battery is the next thing on my list.

Re: Shuld I replace ICU?

Ordered a new ignition amplifier from Brickwerks and fitted it this morning. It's a slightly different size from the unit I removed so its not attached to the engine bay yet. But guess what, I turned the key and the engine burst eagerly into life - result! All I need to do now is figure out why my b...

Re: Shuld I replace ICU?

Tested the hall sender and it seems ok so it looks like I need to get a new ignition unit. Latest problem now is my battery keeps draining. I checked with the meter and pulled each fuse to try and find the dodgy circuit but no difference. Tried disconnecting the leisure battery in case it was a faul...

Shuld I replace ICU?

Took the van for a couple of runs after putting the engine (1985 1.9 DG) back in and all seemed ok, perhaps running a little hotter than before. Anyway I drove to work (13 miles) without a hitch, but when it came time to drive home again the van conked out a couple of times after only driving a few ...

Re: Engine out - can of worms opened?

Engine now back in place. Filled her with oil. Put all the engine bay wiring back where it was before (or so I thought). Turned the engine over and was met with a puff of smoke from wiring... oops! Now I'm scratching my head trying to figure out where its all gone wrong. Engine turns over ok, but no...

Re: Engine out - can of worms opened?

Re-did them to one and a half turns. Haven't got to testing it yet as I need to pick up a new oil filter before I fill her up with oil and then water. Do you think I should re-do them a bit less? Engine had done about 160k miles as far as I know.

Re: Engine out - can of worms opened?

Ended up replacing the three rings on number 1 & 2 cylinders. All put back together and looking good. I'm slightly worried that I might have set the tappet clearances wrong. I assumed that the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley needs to be at the top for tdc on cyl 1, etc. I then tightened up ...

Re: Engine out - can of worms opened?

The liner that had the broken ring looks pretty good, in fact all four liners looked in good nick. I think I will opt for the simplest option and only replace the one ring.

Thanks,
Donald.

Re: Engine out - can of worms opened?

I have reassembled one side of the engine and I am now having second thoughts that this might not have been the best action. I have now received a set of new piston rings in order to replace the broken one on the other side. My question now is, is it ok to just replace the piston rings on the one si...

Engine out - can of worms opened?

I have taken the cylinder heads off my 1.9 DG with the intention of fixing a low compression problem by fitting two replacement heads. Now the heads are off I have a couple of different problems to sort out. Firstly, it turns out that the low compression seems to have been due to a broken piston rin...

Re: Heater motor removal problems

Managed, eventually, to get three of the six bolts out, two of the others sheared off and I ended up having to break two of the plastic taps that connect the main body of the heater unit. Cab of the van looks like open heart surgery! Relatively easy job to prise apart the two halves of the unit that...
