Re: Tools needed for cylinder head job..

A torque wrench, a 15mm socket and extension, an 11mm socket. Some fine emery to clean the barrel face and the head face. Some grease to stick the head seals in. Ignore the 'no seal' brigade. It will be too complicated to remove the barrels and grind them in, so don't just clean it all up as much as...

Re: Oil Strainer

They are designed to be washed out and re-used. New gaskets, new soft washer on the nut and don't go mad tightning it. Overtightening can cause the support bolt to break the casting inside, then you gat a really nasty leak form the side of the case.

Re: Long choke cables?

Electric boot popper off ebay. They come with a cable that will operate the choke. You just press a button on the dash to operate.

Re: Wattabugger!

No worries. I bought a DMTL carb with auto choke. Brand new £25 with conversion bits for 2E. I just wanted to play with the injection.

Wattabugger!

The other day I bid on a complete Weber Alpha injection system with interface and disc. I thought it would go crazy, being they cost 1700 quid. Got home late last night and it had finished... £205. Throttle bodies and the bleedin' lot.

Re: what size clutch for a DG engine?

88 should be 228mm. Have a look at the release forks. They flatten and when you fit a new clutch, they click over on the release and hold the clutch disengaged.

Re: Oil filter mounting thing/oil monitoring

I don't know if they will fit, but MK 1 Golf GTIs had cooler take offs in the filter head and a few tappings. The teepiece is going to be the cheapest alternative.

Re: clutch cable - 1981 1600 air cooled

It's better to use washers on the bow tube at the rear to shorten the cable. Did you get a good look at the bulkhead where the cable goes through? They often split.
Always as well to change the rear conduit too

Re: Oil filter mounting thing/oil monitoring

There are sandwich plates on Ebay that allow you to fit a number of gauges etc.

This is one. 400021146085. 22 quid. VW used a shortened version of the 068 filter on some Polos so you could use the shorter filter.

Square cooler came with 2.1 wbx too. They are built like brick out houses, so what is wrong with yours?

Re: Engine races when cold.

It is meant to rev high when cold. VW set them at over 2000RPM. Adjustment is a 7mm nut on a threaded bar that comes from the throttle are to near the choke. If you loosen the top nut, you can then wind the bottom nut down to reduce the amount of throttle opening. Go too far and you'll flood everyti...

The thicker head goes to the case, because the tappet hole is bigger.

Re: Wiring in a new 009 distributer

The main problem with the current run of 009s is the advance. Set at 7.5 btdc, I recently had one that wouldn't advance past 21 degrees.
Don't forget that loads of T25 engines, including 1.6 and 2 litre had distributors that would either interchange, or were robbable for the necessaries.

Single hex 10mm socket, or, if its too worn, a 3/8" socket, knocked on with a hammer.
Threads are 6mm so easy to drill and tap if they snap
