Re: Starter motor rebuild - refitting brushes
Covkid, it is thanks to you and others who have posted here that I and many others now have the confidence to try and tackle these issues by ourselves rather than waste loads of money just swapping parts with sub standard replacement parts. So take the credit where it is due and thank you all

Re: Starter motor rebuild - refitting brushes
As promised - another update. I took battery off and charged up over a couple of days (I forgot to turn charger off but it has built in cut off so it was ok). Checked voltage a couple of hours later and it was 14.1v. I then checked it each day for 4 days - it measured 13.1v on all of them. :ok I tri...

Great stuff - thanks both. That all makes perfect sense. Will give it a go at the weekend...
I'm not in any rush to set my van on fire tbh lol (sorry, it's not funny really).

Re: Starter motor rebuild - refitting brushes
hello again gang!! Finally managed to get up the unit yesterday - first time for a few weeks as I was VW'd out plus our lovely little 5 month old baby tiring us out  So I tested between battery positive and battery negative - showing 12.04v. I then checked battery positive to negative lead whic...

Re: The anatomy of a winding window?
Hi,
Hopefully the scraper will sort it for you, but you could well end up having to do the seals as well - not a difficult job, just a tad fiddly.
As for the username, I have to point the finger at my good lady on that one I'm afraid.
Hope it is sorted now.

Re: The anatomy of a winding window?
Yes, we still get water in the passenger side battery compartment. This on our van appears to be due to a leaking cab door seal - currently removed as van is dry stored and ready for replacement, along with all other seals on the van. Other things to check - silly as it sounds, make s...

Re: The anatomy of a winding window?
Hi,
If its coming in down the sides of the window, it is probably the window scrapers that are at fault - cracked / perished. You might to look at getting those changed? Dead easy to do...
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Starter motor rebuild - refitting brushes
Thanks for all the suggestions and amusing comments :) I will try the earth test suggested next to try and rule that out before setting the van on fire testing the tight engine theory :rofl - but thanks for the heads up on that!! I do try and move the van regularly so don't get seized brakes or flat...

Re: Starter motor rebuild - refitting brushes
Hi Years ago I had a Land Rover with very similar problems. Long story, but in the end the fix was simple. You mentioned 'cleaning out the grooves' on the commutator - it is essential that the individual segments are electrically separate. Tiny fragments of copper get into the grooves and can creat...

Re: Starter motor rebuild - refitting brushes
Ok - so charged the battery up today and after a few hours, turned her over. It was still a bit slow at first but starter seems to have plenty more power and yes she fired at the second attempt (fuel had probably drained down so happy with that!) :D Great to hear the old girl running again and good ...

Re: Solex carb repair 2.0l 1980 Aircooled petrol CU
Hi Guys, Thanks for your answers. I didn't get round to taking a photo today but having charged the battery after starter motor rebuild I turned it over and it fired and runs with no problems as far as it sounded. I left it running for 10-15 mins and manouvered around in the unit with no probs. I am...

Re: Solex carb repair 2.0l 1980 Aircooled petrol CU
So can anyone recommend someone who might be able to repair this?
I will get the throttle spindle bushes done as well while I'm there.
Carbs are Solex 34 PICT 2 & 3.
Thanks,
Chris F

Re: Solex carb repair 2.0l 1980 Aircooled petrol CU
Hi There About 20 years ago I had a CU. One day on the way home from work the van developed a distinct (and new) tinkling sound. I listened to it for just a few ten’s of seconds, and it stopped, but the van began to run poorly. I stopped to investigate, but by the time I’d got the bed out and the h...

Re: Starter motor rebuild - refitting brushes
Hi,
Battery is under 12 mhs old - Bosch S4 so wouldn't expect any issues tbh. What is drop testing?
I did feel like drop-kicking it yesterday...
