Certainly can be disconnected at the dash but much easier to do at the sensor, to find out remove the plug from the sensor - buzzer should go off unless the wire is earthed (I think - I disabled mine as the present engine doesn't have the necessary sensor and I'm pretty sure I had to ground it). If ...

If you loose all the electrics it's most likely a loose main battery lead or earth connection, if the alternator was faulty you should just get the ignition warning light coming on randomly. The igntion switch could be to blame if the rest of the wiring checks out ok.

If there are only two wires coming out of the key switch either shorting them together or disconnecting them (depending how the switch works) should turn it off. Mine had a VW alarm but with the switch outside and needed shorting to stop it going off randomly.

If its anything like my experience you will have to send it back to DVLA about 3 times before they get the details right (I think they got both the new capacity and the engine number wrong the first time and randomly changed the colour the second!).

Also Audi 80s, 90s (probably 100s) all look the same based on my collection of odd bits. I suspect almost any VW group car prior to them adopting the ribbed belt drive mk3 Golfs etc have.

Less likely to be the fuel system if it is poor on both - only the throttle is common, the jets and fuel metering are separate between the gas and petrol systems, based on various previous problems I would always suspect the ignition first, if it is not idling too well that could be timing related. ...

Does it allow running on petrol as well as gas? If so you can eliminate most carb/gas system faults by seeing if there is any difference if you change fuels (as you say gas systems are less likely to block but not impossible). It should go a little better on petrol but not much and both your vans sh...

I've been looking a doing the reverse swap (my current 5-speed is dying) and it appears the consensus is that the early 4-speed needs both the bracket and the linkage changing but the later 4 and 5 are interchangeable (anyone confirm/deny if I still don't understand) - if we get a definitive answer ...

Gearbox compatibility

As my present box is whining and needs to come out for a rebuild I am thinking of putting another one in temporally - question is would a 4 speed from a cable clutch air cooled van fit in place of the 5 speed water-cooled I have now? The bell housing will need changing anyway as I have an engine con...

A lot will depend on your policy wording (some have automatic salvage return but most say the vehicle is the insurers to dispose of), a proper repair probably would write it off if the shell needs serious work, you should be able to buy back the salvage for an agreed amount but it will be recoreds a...

Also avoid GSF - I had one from them and it was awful, looked like it was welded by a blind monkey with the palsy and the thread on the lid was so poor it wouldn't hold pressure. Used a Euro one (the BQ option so more expensive) and that seems ok but still not up to OEM.
