Re: 1.9Dg was fine now very temperamental!

For what it's worth I have pretty much the same issue on my own DG. Mine is on a Webber carb. It runs absolutely fine from cold, but if I leave it to idle, from cold, happily on it's own it will eventually 'hunt' and die! This is after the choke comes off. If I drive it from cold then it behaves its...

Re: Leaky Five speed petrol Gearbox

Aidan In my defence, I did do an oil change on the box in 2016. The drain plug magnet didn't show any reason to be concerned and I was pleased at how little swarf there was on it. Between then and now it seems to have deteriorated rapidly. Is it worth rebuilding and if so what would be the approxima...

Re: Leaky Five speed petrol Gearbox

Booked a couple of days off to drop the box and get it sorted - what is the saying 'I opened a can of worms'? Unbolted and lifted the nose cover off and found loads of shrapnel inside! Various large pieces of shavings and seven (7) what look to be needles from a needle roller bearing that must be bu...

Re: Leaky Five speed petrol Gearbox

Aidan You are a star. Thank you very much for that in-depth explanation and I will be pulling the box out. I may as well change the noisy clutch release bearing while I'm under it - again! Can you confirm that the gasket is very thin? It is probably correct, but the new one seems really thin and per...

Leaky Five speed petrol Gearbox

I have an oil leak from what looks to be the nose end gasket on my five speed petrol box. Can this gasket be easily changed and is there anything to look out for when I remove the nose casing to change it? I don't want to disturb anything in there, so if anybody knows then all advice greatly appreci...

Re: Changing thermostat 1.9 dg

The bleed screw is held on by a retainer and I'm not sure how much it should turn by, but if you have bled it before without any problems then it should be good again.

Re: Changing thermostat 1.9 dg

Personally I can't see why you would drain the whole system down, unless you wanted to give it a complete flush out. So, no it isn't a necessary thing to do. I can't remember the exact layout of the pipe work, but if you can clamp the pipework either side of the thermostat without doing any damage t...

Yep! If the brushes are really worn then at higher speeds they will struggle to make a good contact. If you can take the brush pack out of your alternator then it's worth a quick check to see.

If you can access the brush pack on your alternator take these out and check their condition. If they are knackered then you can replace them easily. If they are in a poor way and you don't change them it will eventually kill the alternator.

You'll need to find a pair of spotlights that are shallow enough to fit between the grille and the offside bodywork obstruction. The nearside doesn't cause any problems as you know. You can then self tap or rivet them in place directly to the grille. There may be some information out there somewhere...

I have to agree with Covkid on the temperature making a big difference to how the paint behaves and it isn't the end of the world if it seems to go horribly wrong. When I put the fourth coat on last weekend I was up at 5.30am masking up and painting, before the sun came up and the bugs started commi...

Yes it does have a slight orange peel effect, but when/if I give it a final flat back and polish then this will be history. With the best will in the world you will not roller without getting the orange peel - imho. I flatted back after the first and third coats and this kept the orange peel to a mi...

Fourth coat on finally and I can sit back and look forward to going on holiday in the bus at the weekend. I'll maybe flat it back and final polish when I get back, but a couple of the guys who saw it for the first time at work yesterday questioned whether I really needed to - which makes all the eff...
