Re: New motor running hot
Amazing. She used to run nice and cool at no higher than a quarter up the gage but if half way is not to worry about, then I'm not going to. Thanks for the insight. My next project will be cleaning all terminals. Fun fun. Sandpaper is all I need for that project or do I soak elements in some kind of...

New motor running hot
Just replaced the 1.6D motor in my 1981 VW T2.5 with an identical one, in an effort to solve overheating and high-pressure issues. Coolant pressure now seems fine but engine temp is running high, at exactly half way on the gage. Heater is warm. Radiator is cold. Mechanic is a friend so I trust he's ...

Re: Overheating - 1981 1.6D in eastern Ukraine
*He prefers to find and install a 1.6L diesel engine like the one he is replacing in the bus. I don't know enough to understand how great a difference exists between the two motors in terms of configuration and installation.

Re: Overheating - 1981 1.6D in eastern Ukraine
Gentlemen, my mechanic here in Dnipro, Ukraine, says he can't see how to install a transverse 1.9L Mk3 Golf motor in my 1981 T2.5 bus. He's quite experienced and a kind, honest guy. So I think he's willing to do the work but he's being upfront about the limits of his knowledge and experience. Would ...

Re: Overheating - 1981 1.6D in eastern Ukraine
Excellent. Thank you so much for the insight. I’ve been debating a replacement vehicle but at this point, I know the bus so well, I am going to get it back on the road. I will take those pipes off today and check them. Really appreciate your time helping me with this.

Re: Overheating - 1981 1.6D in eastern Ukraine
Back to the VW, I'm gonna replace the engine cause I'm using this bus on then front lines. It's difficult to get a good machine here right now. What's the most robust engine I can put in this thing?

Re: Overheating - 1981 1.6D in eastern Ukraine
What's OP? Removed the thermostat. Bled it six ways to Sunday. No strange noises from the water pump but that is a good insight and thank you! My friend thinks there's a crack in the block somewhere. I may just put in a new engine. What's the newest, best motor I can find that will fit in my bus? I...

Also- we have too much pressure in the hoses at the motor but very low pressure at the radiator.

Re: Overheating - 1981 1.6D in eastern Ukraine
Can’t get that brand of cap here but ordered five of the brand that is available and will try them all (they apparently have a 50% failure rate). Thank you both for the insight. In the meantime, I’m buying a smart, 1986, Lada 1500 today to get me around until the bus is fixed.

Overheating - 1981 1.6D in eastern Ukraine
1981 1.6D. Engine overheated after a long drive from Kyiv to Dnipro. I discovered that the crank case breather hose had ruptured at its junction and I'd lost coolant. I made a road-side repair using an aluminum can, some wire, duct tape, pipe clamps, etc. Got home, engine temp was fine. Drove that w...
