Auto gearbox fluid levels

I know that the auto transmission fluid is checked after bringing the engine temperture up to operating levels but does anybody know what the dipstick should show when the engine is cold? thanks.

dexron transmission fluid

In the Haynes manual it says use dexron I or dexronII i can't seem to find it anywhere. Q8 sell a dexron IID is this suitable.thanks

AUTOBOX LEAK

I have a leak from the autobox sump dripping atf fluid,i have a new gasket,i,m hoping it's a case of just changing that,any advice would be appreciated. i understand that the nut on the oil sump shouldn't be overtightened(finger tight plus a half turn with the spanner) does this apply to the autobox...

auto transmission fluid

Haynes book says use Dexron, couldn't find any local so went to volkswagen dealer who sold me some fluid that just says suitable for volkswagen and audi automatic gears.Is this ok for a 1983 water cooled transporter,at 9 quid a litre it wants to be.

Thanks very much for the info guy's.It's a 83 camper so there's a chance it was the original engine 52,000 on the clock.

engine numbers

Hi everyone,new to the club,have just bought my first VW.It's a 1.9 water cooled with a dg engine.I was wondering if it's possible to tell the age of the engine from the numbers stamped in the engine bay as i would like to know if it was the original engine.
