Re: Hightop roof sealant

A good alternative is Tigerseal. Same applies, needs a thorough clean, but it's especially good at sticking anything to anything. Being a hamfisted oaf, for me it's usually "index finger" to "middle finger" or "hand" to "lovely clean kitchen cupboard" mind you...

Spring clip ID help?

Found this rattling round the door pocket where it's been stashed for an unknown number of years. The quality of the previous work on this van is... variable... so it's entirely possible he was just too lazy to find a bin for it. https://i.imgur.com/E7cTEEC.jpeg I have Google image searched but that...

"Course of action" as per the colonel in the old videogame Metal Gear Solid.

Literally the only time I've ever heard it but it's stuck with me for nearly 30 years so... :D

Overheating - critique my COA

Been out in the van this weekend - 1990 non-turbo diesel, manual, high roof, no service history and MOT checker puts it between 100k and 250k miles depending on the year you look at (!). We have been across the dales including some long climbs, and it's been hot weather. The temp gauge has slowly cl...

Re: Front Wheel Bearing replacement

Old post but very much appreciated, never done taper wheel bearings before and now the van is... Slightly less noisy than before. But the bearings are now good. Thank you!

Not starting when pointing downhill

I'm working on secondhand info here so bear with me... Woman and her mum have been out in her mum's camper, its a 1989 1.7 diesel. She's noticed that when it's pointing nose downhill that it takes a lot longer to start, then when it does there's plumes of white smoke. She's said it's got half a tank...

Re: Leak off pipe - clips?

"rubber clamping force" sounds like a terrible bunch of superheroes.

But thanks for the quick answer - much appreciated. It has no service history so there's going to be lots of things I'll question... Factory spec... Or buggered about with by the 12 previous owners... :D

Leak off pipe - clips?

Afternoon all, First job since getting the van to SEHQ after winter, was to find the diesel leak that it's developed. Easy find - leak off pipe doing its best impression of a decorative water feature. Going to get some pipe and renew them all - should they have any sort of clips on or are they purel...

Excellent shout on the flap wheels. A variety of grits to go from shaping to finishing.

And always remember the adage "a grinder and some paint will make a welder ehat he ain't" :D

Re: Welding and panel working tools

I wouldn't be keen on using adhesives because they tend to be a bit fussy about temperature, humidity, curing time and vibration. Things you can get away with in a static application don't necessarily work in something that moves, twists, vibrates and gets hotter and colder.

Re: Welding and panel working tools

Get hold.of some scrap metal and have a play with the MIG until you are consistent. Settings online are a guide but the last tweak is the difference. Absolutely cut back as far as you can to good metal, if you end up making bigger patches so be it - better than trying to get a good weld on almost-go...

Re: Fuel spilling when brimmed - 1990 diesel

Thank you SO much for the detailed help. Never fiddled with anything as quirky as a rear engined VW before so learning as I go and it's very handy that this forum exists to hold my hand.

I'll have a good look at it this week. Thank you!
