Thanks Aidan and well explained.
I have jumped the wiring on the two speed cooling fan and it works okay but I was just concerned that although I’ve had the engine running for long periods the fan has never come on so it’s good to know if it overheated I would soon know about it.
Thanks again.

Coolant.
Hi, if my 1900cc petrol was to overheat does the water/steam etc have an escape route other than the half filled expansion tank? I realise this might sound a dumb question but all vehicles that I’ve previously owned have had a pressure cap on the radiator with an exit point, then once the water/stea...

Re: Idle problem now!
I’m back to square one again!
After a trip with no idle issues I obviously put the kiss of death on the problem by stating that all was well.
Glad you have solved you problem and sorry to sound dumb, what is snake oil?

Re: Idle problem now!
Update on the idle issue. Used the carb cleaner idea which had no obvious effect so that helped to eliminate one possibility and prompted me to clean up the exterior of the carb, lightly oiled any moving parts and refitted the original rotor arm which I thought had been ditched along with the leads/...

Re: Idle problem now!
Not had a chance to test with carb cleaner yet as the weather’s been crap, once I do and if this has an effect what would be my next step?
Kind regards,
Paul.

Re: Idle problem now!
I realise to those out there who have a vast knowledge of the mystical workings of the VW engine this next question will sound completely dumb but looking at the photo Steve has kindly sent would turning the idle adjuster shown in the picture help? I don’t and haven’t touched it in case I make thing...

Re: Idle problem now!
Firstly many thanks Steve and Dave for coming back to me. As suggested I removed the vac pipe from carb to distributer and blew through it and it appeared blocked, looking more closely it had a split so I replaced with new pipe and also the pipe from carb to air box. This definitely improved the run...

Idle problem now!
More help needed! I have 1987 1900, petrol which won’t idle. Two very helpful members suggested that I replace the vac tubes from the carb to the distributor as my van kept cutting out on the run which I did. It always starts first time and seems to idle okay on the drive but when driven after a sho...

Re: Cutting out problem.
Many thanks guys for your help. Unfortunately I junked all the old leads and cap, I did also check the vac tubes. As soon as this band of rain passes I’ll check that the leads are in correct position which I’m confident they are especially as it starts on the button and ticks over great and runs fin...

Cutting out problem.
Hi, just taken my 1987, 1900 petrol for a run and although it starts first time and tick over is fine. Problem is it cuts out once on the road. It will re-start okay but once underway it cuts out again. The only way I can drive it back is to over rev it. Before I fitted a new distributor cap, leads,...

Re: Temperature gauge
Thanks for the heads up, if by board you’re referring to VW rubber sheet holding the printed circuit board I’ve ditched that and hard wired with a kit bought from Slaughterhouse. I also replaced the relay on the fuse board. The gauge was completely dead before I had done the above changes. unfortuna...

Temperature gauge
Any ideas? I have hard wired the dash as many of the instruments weren’t working (buzzer of doom, water temp gauge etc). With the ignition on the water temp gauge needle moves from its parked position but running the engine until radiator is hot doesn’t cause the needle to climb any higher. Is this ...
