I would say it must be internal to the gearbox if you have eliminated the engine mounts and the gearbox nose mount and you are sure there is no slack in the driveshaft CVs . There isnt anything else in the drive train . Maybe you need to get someone to look under whilst taking up the drive slack to ...

Don’t waste your hard earned on lead replacement snake oil, you dont need it , these engines were designed for 2star and have hardened valve seats …..

The fuel pump is under the engine , just behind the o/s wheel kind of …if you are crawling under from the side .. The correct battery should be a type 065 . However cleaning the earth strap that goes to the nose of the gearbox and the battery itself , and the main connections on to the starter motor...

If you cant see it running, have no idea if it leaks , over heats or knocks , no more than £200 in my book

So, did you find the issue with the vac pipes obvious ? Split pipe ? Missing pipe ?
Whilst you were checking the vac pipes, did you disturb the engine wiring ? The black wire to the idle cut off solenoid in the carb possibly ?

Oh the difference is definitely worth it … the 2.1 performs much nicer than the 1.9 on the carb , I’ve made this change many years ago

Check the vac pipes , check you haven’t dislodged one of them , possibly the one from the carb to the dissy

Yep….. i would say so, but quite how I’m not sure unless your earth strap was hanging down onto the brake pies?
