Excessive (?) Smoke on startup 1.6TD JX with leaking K14 Turbo
Hi 1.6TD JX, 1989, 86,000 verified miles. Does this cold-start look excessively smokey and/or noisey ? Ambient temp ~12 deg. Cold start lever fully open. JQGEcBhpMFo I've done plenty of reseach, but I'm still very much on the learning curve with this engine, and with diesels in general having never ...

Re: JX TD - Pump sprocket marks
Nice one Zoltan, cheers 👍I guess I missed it with naked eye cos my van is a Karmann Gipsy so my engine access is primarily from the inside, so I've not got visuals onto that face of the pulley. Although I should nave spotted it in the pic I took by lowering smartphone into place. Cheers mate, you've...

JX TD - Pump sprocket marks
Hi 1.6TD JX Injection pump sprocket has two holes sized to take the locking pin. So how do I know which one to use to lock the pump before fitting the timing belt ? https://i.imgur.com/6iUVK3v.jpg I've referred to Bentley et al, but I can't find any mark on the sprocket itself. The only mark I can ...

JX - Crank Out Of Position ???
Hi I've made a schoolboy error on my JX today and need some guidance please. Locked IP and cam at TDC #1 with flywheel mark aligned with bellhousing indicator. Removed cam sprocket and tension pulley (new timing belt imminent) Removed old head (cracked) Set new head for TDC #1 and locked it with slo...

Re: 1.6 TD JX - Foam in coolant
Finally got to take the head off today. https://i.imgur.com/jgjCxC7.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ZLabmu9.jpg The oil you're see above was residue from the removal process, nothing concerning. Gasket came away cleanly and didn't have any obvious signs of failure. Top: https://i.imgur.com/IvQzuSs.jpg Unders...

JX Cylinder Head Crack
Hi Removed head from my JX today, as suspected failed gasket was allwoing gasses into the coolant (subject of another thread of mine). As anticipated, head has cracks between all four pair of valves, from what I've read commonplace and not of major concern. But cylinder #3 has minor (minor to my un...

Re: 1.6 TD JX - Foam in coolant
progressing slowly, though I'm taking the time to go through everything, as watercooled VW's, and diesels in general, are new to me. It took a lot of time and swearing to get the Turbo off...one exhaust and one manifold stud sheared. The Turbo itself (K14) seems good - spinning freely, no axial pla...

Re: 1.6 TD JX - Foam in coolant
K Seal is the worst you can do, it lines everything and is a beach to clean out. Coolant systems are either water tight (what they are designed for) or not. JX engines are common for developing cracks between the exhaust and inlet lifters in the head = exhaust gas going where it shouldn't and press...

1.6 TD JX - Foam in coolant
Hi Folks Need some guidance from you water-cooled experts. I’ve 20 years on Aircooled T1 and T2, but still pretty new to my 1990 T3. 1.6TD JX Karmann Gipsy, 2.6t unladen, she’s a big old unit. Long story short, my coolant is foaming: https://i.imgur.com/pOo9HSA.jpg This is a small sample of the f...

AGG Engine Conversion - Electrics
Hi I’m a long-term Aircooled guy, who right now is outside my comfort zone whilst helping out with a T3 engine conversion. So this post is very much a reach-out to the global water-cooled community, cheers in advance for any assistance. We’re replacing an end-of-life 1983 petrol DG engine with a 2.0...
