Well, I finally got chance to have another look at this and I'm pleased to report the problem solved, the solution being Jawin89s' suggestion of a 10k resistor (0.5W) fitted in line on the signal wire although I fitted it at the tacho end rather than the coil end.
Thanks everyone for the input.

Re: Newly fitted rev counter fluctuates wildly
@syncroandy - wiring diagrams the tacho came with show direct connection to the coil. It was purchased from DemonTweeks (Brickwerks were out of stock), don't know what to expect from their customer service but could be worth a shot. @Jawin89 & marlinowner - Thanks for those suggestions, I had re...

Re: Newly fitted rev counter fluctuates wildly
Cheers, will do. 12V is straight from G5 terminal on back of the fuse/relay panel so not leisure battery.

Re: Newly fitted rev counter fluctuates wildly
12V and earth check out fine, but I didn't disconnect the thin green wire when I did my test run from the coil so that's next on the list, thanks, good suggestion.
I'm starting to think this might some form of EMI/RFI but I'll have to wait a day or two before I can investigate further.

Newly fitted rev counter fluctuates wildly
Hi, Fitted a rev counter (this one: https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/vdo-gauge-52mm-tacho-6000rpm.html ) to our van (petrol, 2.1 MV) over the weekend and something's not right. The needle fluctuates wildly and is reading far too high. For example, at idle a rpm of around 3000 is indicated but the needle...

Hi All, Many thanks for all the input. Will be ordering the VDO temp sender for the sump.

Oil pressure and temperature gauges
Hi all, Currently looking to fit oil pressure and oil temperature gauges to our van (engine: 2.1 MV). We've found plenty of helpful stuff online and we'll be machining a manifold to take senders/sensors out of aluminium, which will be fed by an extension run from the low rpm/0.3 bar sensor location,...

Re: nuts and bolts?
I bit the bullet big style and bought a box of 50 bolts (plus 100 nuts and washers!!), when doing ours with a view to selling the surplus on here, just not got round to it yet......so PM me and I can send you a set, £5:00 plus P&P. They are correctly rated - 10.9 as the origional vw bolts, thoug...

Re: I did something stupid...
Thanks Jed – feeling more philosophical about it already! Simon – That’s exactly how I did the other side – no problems, just wish i'd done that to begin with. Matt – Cheers for tip although I was actually dealing with the ‘front upper’ wishbones not the rear ‘trailing/swinging arm’ (not heard them ...

I did something stupid...
Yesterday I was tackling badly corroded wishbone bushes as part of a continuing (now year long) 'extensive refurbishment'. In an attempt to remove the inner steel and rubber bits I decided to use a hydraulic ram to press them out as I consider hitting boned rubber things with a big hammer an exercis...

Thanks for all the info and advice It seems that there is not much between the two, certainly not enough to dissuade me from buying a van with either engine. With regard to availabilty of spares, is it siginificant that Justkampers/gsf do not list parts for the MV? I know Cj, Syncro nutz et al are a...

Engine Query
Hi, Looking at buying a syncro, fancy a van with a petrol 2.1; but what are the pro and cons between the MV / DJ. I know the DJ outputs higher BHP buts need to run on the higher octane fuels. Likewise the MV can run on just about anything but outputs less power. Are these engine inter-changeable lik...
